The whole 'swiping through panels' bit looks a lot like the way I work already: On OSX, my tendency is to full-screen all my apps, use the split-screen view for multi-tasking, and swipe between them all.
I'd have to wonder about the notion of tracking gaze: e.g. lack of on-screen visual feedback affirming that the device accurately knows what you're 'looking at/selecting' before you ask it to do something.
EDIT: I just noticed — six-finger gestures!?
tfw when yr Fullscreen gesture is Goatse.
Hahaha, oh my god I cannot unsee goatse now!
Nooooo!
Apparently I'd gone 17 years without knowing about Goatse. Life ruined.
Really wish I could un-know it.
You know what they say about curiosity?
Don't Google Goatse
I just googled "Goatse". I WANT TO UNKNOW!!!
A great deal of effort was put into this. The writing was clear. The examples as well. I am very impressed and hopeful that this is the work of a 21 year old student.
Came here to say this. This is a knockout (design, writing, presentation) from someone that young. Getting nervous!
As others said, not every idea is very convincing. But it's this kind of analysis that reminds me why I do what I do every day. Look at a status quo practice, improve it. That's what design is (to me).
Props to this kid for getting all this together. If I were his advisor I'd tell him to edit down both concept and the delivery. But there's a lot of good there. Makes me think about going back to school so I'd have time and a context to tackle things theoretically on occasion.
"hashtag documents hashtag sketch"
looking forward to talking to my computer like an SNL skit
"Computer load up Celeryman please."
"Search for the document and sketch labels please".
Yay.
Wow, it's really shocking to see some real challenge solution on Designer News. Also another shock fact is the guy is actually looking for a job as an Intern.
It's sad that tons of spoiled kids bluntly calling theirselves "designers" "producers" etc without any significant experience and this guy takes their steps very humbly. I really hope we'll see Lennart's name on great products in the future. I don't want to see another gem crushed by the pretentious "design" scene.
You can instantly see a lot of effort went into this. I really like the visual appeal and the website is well designed. As far as the concept goes I'm not sold, but like with any concept, thats what concepts are for!
Not 100% sold on this, but some ideas are nice and worth exploring!
The site design is pretty sweet also.
First thought: I would enjoy using this concept on OS X.
Second thought: I would really enjoy using this concept on iOS even more.
Well done.
You lost me at "Click and drag... with 6 fingers"
Two handed trackpad operation?!
Single clicking a green a button is much faster.
Seeing things like that, makes me realise it's an interface for "you". The secret of a good interface is it's for everyone.
Heck, let's just crowdfund this, I mean it worked for Remix OS as well. :-P
(Apple take note, this would make a decent OS X/2 as well)
Clear story and interesting views.
The "look at what you want to interact with" is a very interesting experience, combined with simple gestures — it feels very intuitive.
How ever, tagging documents/items could be troublesome — as the user needs to remember all the tags in order to benefit from the quick search and when you'll have thousands of files, having no folders will make the structure a bit overwhelming.
The panels next to each other is cool, it shows the path that the user has taken — so it would be easier to backtrack your steps. I wonder why two panels are shown completely instead of showing the active one and "part" of the previous panel. I suppose that both panels compliment each other, and I do wonder if it's possible to complete your task using just 1 panel.
Never the less, interesting ideas are shown in the video — and more videos/ideas like these should be published without fear for rejection — it takes us all forward, not backwards. And increasing our productivity will only support this.
Seems like iOS for desktop.
Interesting concept, and definitely a lot of thought put into the idea. Worth talking about for sure. I'm not sure I agree with many of the proposed concepts.
I love this, incredible quality of research and work. Well done and good luck with the job search.
That's all very well but you are excluding users with small screens, which are the majority.
So nice to see some new ideas for the desktop!
If productivity is real goal with this interface, then it got off on the wrong foot.
Multitasking and constant distractions (triggered via gaze or by any other method) do not improve productivity, despite us feeling otherwise. This interface is essentially an elegantly powerful distraction factory.
I don't mean to be a hater — I think there are some interesting, novel ideas in here. But they're not going to improve productivity much.
Some further reading:
I found the video quite funny ... Back in 2009 there was a keynote that presented a revolutionary device ( no, not the iPhone) that pretty much did exactly the same thing : Palm Pre and webOS . 7 Years later and its concepts and philosophy are still "seen" as fresh ideas. Too revolutionary for its own good i guess . Awesome demo site and presentation non the less . Here is the link to the cards demo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUSui3rH1a8
Awesome concept, six finger gestures aside.
I think the idea of "tagging" files is actually pretty reasonable for a lot of normal users—Apple are definitely heading in this direction. However, I'd like to see how this would work for more "advanced" users. For example, developers need to be able to organise sometimes hundreds of files in a project, tagging would fail miserably at that.
My guess is that you would still have a "Finder" type application that plugs in to the file system and offers up a more traditional view of the file system.
This concept is friggin' amazing. I have my own OS project, but I'd love to incorporate these ideas. I wish I had my own company and lots of money, I'd hire this guy in an instant.
That being said, this concept only works on big screens. Laptops? Nope. I don't see how I could use it on a 15" MBP. Still, this is sharp.
I don't like this concept of panels. Having multiple windows, larger and smaller ones, is way better for productivity.
This is one of the best case studies I've seen in a while. Very organized, clean, and with a ton of examples. This is just my opinion, but I definitely prefer this sort of UI workflow on things like phones and tablets. Those devices tend to be more geared towards light workflow, while the desktop experience is more for very precise type work.
Nice try! Although I felt this is a concept most cosmetic than functional... I yep... this reminds me to CON10UUM
Great idea. I hope he gets the job, he is looking for.
Reminds me of the days when I used to replaces my windows computer desktop with something better - http://www.lighttek.com/talisman.htm
Really very nice UI design of the website
This is great. a lot of great ideas in here. I favor the panels for windows and being able to slide through them from left to right - seems like you may be able to try something like that now with multiple desktops (an individual desktop per app)...
OS X Spaces should handle this right?
Ah yes, that's what it's called. You could potentially simulate this idea with spaces
