I agreed with the comments regarding the color scheme. I disagree that designers are less intellectual than programmers.

I sunk it. We don't need to pay an undue amount of attention to the HN submission :)
Hahahha "Rails. No."
the complaints seem to boil down to "i don't get the icons" and "I need more contrast" -- per the latter, it is true that the pale greys on here will be fine for a macbook or ipad, but very pale / hard to read on samsung monitors and the like
Those are both legitimate and valid problems
We have to go deeper.
Now I'm just waiting for someone to post this discussion on Hacker News...
Brace yourselves everyone, here come opinions.
Ha ha some of the comments are funny. - "I have no idea what the links do, I only can guess when seeing the icons. The smiley icon is the most confusing."
so CLICK THEM if you're not sure. Sheesh where's people sense of adventure and discovery these days. And c'mon you don't know what a plus sign might mean?
To be fair, this is valid feedback from HN (which is somewhat rare). The icon-only nav is "mystery meat"-ish and could benefit from a tasteful tooltip treatment on hover.
There wasn't anything in that thread that was both valid and something I wasn't already about to fix.
As for the mystery meat icons — I like them. This isn't a site for everyone. It's for us. Once you know what those icons mean, you don't need explaining. If you're not able to use the site because you can't figure out the four icons above, that's cool.
There are plenty of little fixes that we'll get to as soon as we clear some important LayerVault stuff off our plate (roughly tomorrow). This site was built over a few weekends and intended as a fun, small side-project.
The contrast of how light-hearted we keep it here on DN, and how stomping-mad HN gets over a few immaterial things is totally perfect. If you ever needed something to point to that would explain why this site exists, that thread is it.
In the meantime, we're thinking of ways to make the site a little more fun while keeping quality up.
This is awesome, Allan.
It's quite interesting that most of the complaints on HN so far have been mild annoyances (if at all) in my case. A different audience, I guess…
Allan needs to make an "Inception top" badge for this type of thing.
