Ask DN: What kind of questions would you ask the Interviewer?

almost 8 years ago from , Freelance Designer/Developer

I'm currently looking for a new job. I feel confident with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I like to ask questions when I'm interviewing for a job (like most people do), I feel I can get a good look in to how the company works and handles things (especially when they're put on the spot).

What kind of questions would you ask the Interviewer?

Appreciate it :)

    I usually ask:

    x) do you use timesheets?

    x) Is this a new role that has been created or am I replacing someone?

    x) what kind of hardware / software (& versions )will I be using?

    x) What training programs are available?

    x) are the hours strict? Can I start and work earlier / later on some days, with adequate notice.

    x) If my application is successful, what would you like to see me accomplish in the first 30 days?

    x) What skills are missing in the current team, that you’re looking to fill with a new hire?

Depending on who you're interviewing with, you can learn a lot about a company by asking what their plans/hopes are for their company in 2 years/5 years/10 years.

Working on a blog post & podcast ep about this now. Here's the list I'm working with as I've been interviewing for a few months. More culture & team questions than nitty-gritty technical process.

    • How are teams structured? Where do I fit and who will I be working with?
    • Who are the stakeholders helping to drive design decisions?
    • How is my success measured? How often is feedback given?
    • What qualities must the ideal candidate possess to succeed in this role?
    • What is the onboarding process like for new hires? this will alert you to red flags in start ups that don’t give enough shits very quickly
    • Where do you see this role in 1 year, 5 years?
    • What are [Company]'s goals for the next 1 year, 5 years?
    • What is the biggest challenge facing the team? How will this role help solve that challenge?
    • What are the best and worst parts of the company culture?
    • What does the team like to do for fun?
    • What is your parental leave policy?
    • Do you have trans-inclusive healthcare?
    • What internal resource groups do you have for employees?
    • What opportunities are available for training, conferences, and continuing education?
    • What does success in regards to diversity at [Company] look like?
