Ask DN : Anyone in DN using Duet Display?

almost 8 years ago from

Is anyone in DN using Duet Display regularly? It has a good review on the the Appstore but I read some old posts stated that it's a resource hog and drain your MBP battery fast. Some users also report that it is really hard to uninstall it.

I want to buy it because I will be traveling a lot in the next 3 months and think that it would be a good companion for my MBP. So I'd love to hear any experience you've had with it (especially with the latest update) before throw 16 bucks into this. Thanks!

I use it. It works well enough. It certainly isn't high-fidelity like a regular external monitor, but it is useful for a passive second display. When I do web development, I usually put the web browser on the iPad and the code on my main display, but you can use it for whatever use-case you can think of.

It certainly is more portable and cheap than an external monitor, that is for sure.

Hi, Thanks for sharing. Does it make your mac fan spin fast and loud?

Hey Andy, this was only a problem for the initial launch in December 2014. Average CPU usage by Duet has been reduced dramatically across multiple updates. One of the largest performance updates was just rolled out this week.

Uninstalling has never been hard, it's just a button in the computer app's settings. Some users didn't understand that the computer needed to be restarted to complete the uninstall. So we made that more clear in the pop up dialog.

@ Alex, did you enable Retina resolution for higher image quality from the menu bar? You should have a high fidelity image.

Hi Mason, One last question, is it safe to use duet for a long time usage? I mean , is there any potential hardware issue that could happen to my mbp or ipad if I use this application continuously / daily? Thanks!

I ended up by purchasing the app and I'd say that I agree with @Alex Anderson. It certainly isn't high-fidelity like a regular external monitor, but it probably will be useful for a passive second display

How's this running these days? If I have my MacBook plugged into an outlet will a iPad using Duet drain the battery? Also will it keep an iPad at 100%?
