Save some space and archive them, but always keep 'em.

Storage is so cheap anyways, I save everything forever and put it on an external drive when my machine gets too crowded. This might be less feasible if you deal with lots of video, but I like having a record of things.

I've kicked myself so many times for tossing old stuff in the name of laziness or "not needing it anymore". I have learned my lesson many times over. Keep it forever.

I think that it's really a matter of personal preference and speculation mate. At the end of the day, most self storage units are meant to last you a really long time - as long as you make use of the space well enough. If you think things are getting too crowded but you're sure that the items are going to be worth the expenditure on more space, that's really up to you at the end of the day. It's not really a decision that we can make for you!

A couple of years, it depends how cool-important is the project. We should live in the present/future, so we have to get rid from the past. Deleting old projects just give me the sensation of freedom.

Forever. I create a free private repo on bitbucket and push it all there.

You may want to hold on to some old memories and feel nostalgic. Keep them if it's necessary. You might need them at some point i think. but the space though.

I use MEGA to store my old projects/assets. 50gb free storage.

Forever in my Dropbox. And I keep recent projects locally.

I've lost the sources files and assets of my old website (Flash) and 3d renderings I made ages ago. I still mis them and feel regret I was so incautious with my files back then (2004/2005).

I never delete anything unless I know for a fact that I'll never need it again. As others have said, storage is very affordable today.

It depends what you mean by “assets”. I keep source files forever and have documents that are over 20 years old. I don’t keep older versions of assets used in the app or website though — those get overwritten with each update.

We have an "Archived Clients" folder, where we archive old projects or whole clients. We keep these folders on Google Drive, but use selective sync not to sync them locally. It's probably a few hundred GB by now, but as others have said storage is super reasonably priced. We maybe pay $2/mo to have access to ALL our archives.

I keep it all in my Dropbox to make sure it will not be lost in the future.

Thanks everyone! Yeah fair point storage is cheap so may as well archive them externally and drop them from the repo. We're using Github for our artwork repo so part of the problem is if someone wants to edit something they have to download everything (around 13GB, lot's of old PSD's). It's version controlled anyway so making an archive and deleting from the repo should do the trick! I just thought maybe I'm being too soft not deleting my old stuff ;)
