    Fast. Free.*

*Until more than five people use our product and we realise that hosting images costs money

Marcel, as it's stated in the footer, Ravioli is using Imgur to host images. It's free as long as I don't make money on it :)

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. Didn't see the footer.

So all the images that get uploaded are publicly available. Is there a page on imgur that you can see new uploads on (and therefor see ravioli uploaded images)?

Yes, it means exactly that. But here's what made me consider using Imgur:

          About images you upload

You can upload images anonymously and share them online with only the people you choose to share them with. If you make them publicly available, they may be featured in the gallery. This means that if you upload an image to share with your friend, only your friend will be able to access it online. However, if you share an image with Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Reddit, etc., then it may end up in the gallery.

So basically if you just use it for simple image sharing, it's not going to matter. Droplr and CloudApp also shares links that are publicly available, if you type in the correct url. Same thing on Imgur. But it's anonymous.

I am making sure that every user of Ravioli will understand this risk.

    Second paragraph:

Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network.

Did you speak with them, or did you go this far without reading the (very short) terms of use of the service you've based everything on?

Louis-André, thanks for being concerned. This is a term of use for Imgur for uploading images. Ravioli is using Imgur API to upload images to their site, so this does not apply to Ravioli, but it applies to the users of Ravioli. So yes, please don't use Ravioli/Imgur to host those things.

The API docs are pretty clear on how the API can be used.

Also, I've contacted Imgur previously. Everything seems fine now, the only thing remains is the daily rate limit on their part, which can be increased for free apps like Ravioli. :)

Edit: also, I've only spent about 10-15 hours coding this app, it's pretty simple :) If that goes to waste and Imgur doesn't let it run, then I guess I'll just use it for myself instead of CloudApp or Droplr.

Ah – that makes sense. It connects to the API with the individual user's imgur account?

        Do you know about mac2imgur?

No, the connection is anonymous, just like when you open up Imgur in your browser.

Yes, there are a few very similar apps using Imgur, but I'm trying to create a more complete user experience around this concept :)

Great job buddy! Always brave to push an app onto DN – it's scary enough to start a post on this place, much less share your own work. Love the name, and clever idea too.

why not use imgur directly instead?

Well compare Imgur's upload process to a simple menubar app's.

To upload to Imgur: 1) You open the browser 2) Open Imgur 3) Drag in your image 4) Press upload 5) Copy image URL 6) Paste the link

In Ravioli: 1) The app runs in the menu bar 2) Drag the image over 3) Paste the link

      Half the steps required :)

So, basically, the link looks like ravoli.com/... instead of imgur/ right?

Is it kind of mapping that URL to Imgur's URL? How does that work?

Yeah, the link is like that. But this part I'm not really sure of just yet. The app will either copy the original imgur link, or the rvo.li shortened link. The latter might be a concern for Imgur, so we'll see. :)

As always in DN have some rude comments on cool app

I don't think any of the comments are rude. They all are valid concerns, which will be addressed in the FAQ of the app :)

This is a really nice App Zoltán! I will start using it ASAP. Thanks a lot! Also, do you plan on open source anytime soon in the future? Kudos!

Can I upload images directly from my clipboard? I use puush to do that right now. It's very handy for uploading screenshots from currently opened Photoshop documents. (select area with marquee tool, copy merged, then right click puush and 'Upload Clipboard')

Hey Mohsin. That's a good idea! The first version will not have this feature, but I'll definitely add this to my Ravioli wish list :) Thanks!
