But they didn't update the mouse design, which was easily the worst of these three products.

I'm actually very happy with the design of the mouse. Use it everyday.

Is there a reason someone would choose the mouse of the trackpad, anyway?

They're far more accurate and work better for two handed computing like 3D modelling, video editing.

And 2D design. I can't work quickly without a desktop keyboard and mouse.

Definitely agree but thought I'd get a backlash if I said that haha.

Ideal computing environment would probably have both because trackpad are nice for lazily scrolling/zooming through a webpage. Find myself reaching to the keyboard on my iMac sometimes but realising mid reach there isn't a trackpad.

True. I've been using the trackpad for so long, that I don't have problems with accuracy. Of course, I mainly use Sketch and Ai where it is easy to move points around if they aren't perfect the first time.

I end up using the arrow keys on the keyboard for anything precise anyway.

I 100% agree, i never liked the mouse design, feels tiny in my hand. A friend of mine uses the Magic mouse and he tried my Logitech MX performance for a while and loved it. The mouse that i use at work is Razer Deathadder and cant ask for better mouse. Maybe it doesn't look Apple-y but who cares when it does the job.

            • Michal CMichal C, almost 8 years ago

Haha of course not! What I'm saying is that I got:

              • Energizer charger,
              • 2x re-chargable battery for keyboard,
              • 2x re-chargable battery for mouse,
              • 2x spare battery,
              • and then after ~1year 4x battery again since the old ones started losing charge quickly

If you add to that all the time spent replacing/charging the batteries and the silly BT icon always showing low battery—I think I'll be happy to pay the little extra for the peace of mind that I can just plug the keyboard/mouse in for 2 minutes and work for whole day again...

But you were replying to the comment about the Apple charger, saying you didn't know about it. You would still need to do the same thing as you're talking about here with the Apple charger.

Then your last paragraph is responding to the built-in recharging of the new products, which is not what that comment you're replying to was saying at all.

I'm comparing prices of the end user experience mate.

Apple AA (which I didn't know about) is cheaper than Energizer AA.

The new fixed battery is long term cheaper than any AA.

I think it's pretty stupid that the mouse recharging slot is on the bottom. At least with batteries when they died you could put new ones in and keep doing what you were doing. Would have made sense to put it at the top of the mouse and turn it into a wired mouse while it charges. Poor design?

    13 points
    • Filip RadelicFilip Radelic, almost 8 years ago

They said it takes about two minutes to charge it for a full day's use. That's approximately the same time it would take you to take the empty batteries out, find the full ones and put them back in. Not saying I wouldn't like to be able to just plug it in and continue using, but it's not that bad. Well, it's not worse than before :)

      • Laurens SpangenbergLaurens Spangenberg, almost 8 years ago

I think it's still stupid simply because it takes effort, or at least psychological perceived effort. Instead of having it so one could just plug it on both sides and continue to get work done, one has to break their productivity flow.

Plus it requires making a new habit to charge the mouse at night or morning. That doesn't seem like good design to me.

It was definitely designed that way on purpose, to discourage use while it's plugged in. I would think it's because of effects similar to that of using an iPhone while it's plugged in (your cable gets twisted around and wears faster).

      It's for:

      1. ejecting/detaching the keyboard from iPad/iPhone/TV and switching back to virtual keyboard on those devices

      2. ejecting an external SuperDrive obviously

      3. and for legacy HW with built in SuperDrive of course

So still a lot of ejecting going on I guess haha

I was happy at first but then realized these will fall in the same trap as other apple device: the battery would be more than half the price of the device, when the battery breaks, you are probably gonna buy an entirely new device than just replacing the battery.

Honestly, the old USB keyboard was great, I've been using it for 8 years now and still work like a charm. How often do you "need" a wireless keyboard?

The one product that really needed changing got the fewest changes of them all. The mouse is possibly one of the worst pieces of hardware (except the lightning cables), that Apple makes. Updating it, and not fixing the horrendous ergonomic issues, doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. Especially if the asking price is 80 bucks. For 80 bucks you can basically get any mouse on the market and nearly all of them above the $40 range are way more comfortable to use.

They might not look as 'clean', but when I've made the decision to use a mouse I'm not worrying about whether my hand thinks its pretty enough for it. What I care about is how comfortable and accurate it is.

A mouse is a specific type of product, where the aesthetics actually play a very small role in how good of a product it is.

Apple has made products before that discarded comfort for looks, but usually they've made an effort to fix it when they come around to update the product. Look at the earbuds for example (although, that took quite a long time). So why did the mouse get overlooked here? It's not like people haven't made their complaints clearly, or loudly enough. You can put this mouse in anybody's hands and they'll tell you it's a bad experience (talking purely about the ergonomics here).

I used a Logitech G500s, actually. You don't get the "Magic" gestures, but it's a proper mouse that is precise, feels good in your hand and has a few extra buttons for nifty shortcuts to use in your favorite design tool.

Logitech also had their own take on the "Magic Mouse" (the T620), but it was basically the same thing, although some say it feels a bit better in the hand. Looking at it though, I wouldn't be able to tell.

The best one I saw was actually from Microsoft! No, seriously. They have a quite frankly named mouse called Touch Mouse (pretty straight forward, right?), which looks much more comfortable than the magic mouse or the logitech alternative. But of course it doesn't work with a Mac.

I want to know who had the brilliant idea of putting the charge port under the mouse.

It's ugly as hell to have your mouse bottom up charging, and of course, as impractical as it gets. Who wants to stop whatever he's doing to stare blankly at a charging mouse for 2 hours?

    So stupid it's almost infuriating.

    I hate calling them "Magic."

There isn't even anything special about the keyboard. The mouse and trackpad I get, at least a bit, they've got features no other mouse or trackpad have in their gestures and 3D Touch respectively, but the keyboard is just a keyboard. There's nothing magical.[/grumble]

You might think you understand you might not next year you might understand the different because we become more and more aware of these things now I know when you're setting goals there’s three areas that we go to set a goal to do what we already know how to do that's not going to take us anywhere or we set a goal to do what we think wean do and that doesn't really work either cut there's no inspiration that and you're not going to get a lot of support if you're really going to make things. http://eyeluminousfacts.com/neurocell/

The first thought I had when I bought the very first wireless Apple mouse and keyboard was: Why the hell doesn't this recharge over USB so I can use it like the wired Apple mouse and keyboard I used to use? Seeing this half-step with the mouse is pretty frustrating. It's also the first thought I had when I held a dreamcast controller: Why the hell is the wire coming around to my side of the controller? This is truly disappointing. I can't imagine a good argument for avoiding this immense usefulness.

I prefer the aesthetics of the trackpad and mousepad. I prefer the design of old ones, however, for how cleverly they integrated the batteries; I think I also got a lot of pleasure out of screwing the battery lid off and on with a quarter. With the new devices being rechargeable w/o batteries, there's not much to be clever about. They're simple, straightforward, and bring the white-top style to the trackpad, which makes sense. I'm a big fan of those manual on/off switches too. I could never figure out of my old devices were on or off and would often turn them on, when transporting them in a backpack or something.

It's interesting that they still go with white keys for these devices and black keys for everything else. Anyone know why or have a good, crackpot theory?

I think it's because the mouse and now trackpad are white because they would show up greasy fingerprints, imagine a greasy black mouse or slab next to every Apple desktop. So they go with white keys to match those, although the white keys get grubby on machines where people don't wash their hands enough…

"The rechargeable battery is the biggest change here, and Apple promises that two minutes of charging a dead mouse will provide enough power for about nine hours of use."

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/10/mini-review-apples-new-magic-keyboard-magic-mouse-2-and-magic-trackpad-2/

While you still need to stop what you're doing for a short period of time to recharge, it's not the two hours many here are complaining about. It's a mouse, not a laptop with a power hungry CPU requiring a lot of battery power to run. In daily use, my current magic mouse can run for nearly a month before I need to swap batteries and recharge. I think I can remember to plug my mouse in once or twice a month at night to make sure I'm well supplied with battery power.

I'm still disappointed that I can't get a wireless full size keyboard though. I love the number pad and I'll never give it up.
