If my memory serves me correctly it's something like a 12px gaussian blur with an additional white layer at some particular opacity in screen blend mode or black or some third color/opacity variant.

It's not hard to replicate, this just looks like a convenient way to do it quickly.

There must be an article or something behind this rationale. Is it more than just a gaussian blur or some other simple blur?

It has some sort of lightening or darkening depending and the Yosemite/El Captain version actually mixes some of your desktop background in to the mix for some reason (Make your screen entirely white and check out the menu backgrounds to see this)

I'm pretty sure it also increases the saturation or something along those lines.

Does anybody know about anything similar for Sketch?

In Sketch you can use Background Blur :)

I know but is there any plugin that applies blur and vibrancy to layer/s? I had to create myself a blur and vibrancy template (light, extra light and dark). It would be more convenient if I just press a shortcut and it sets the layer up correctly.

This cracked me up when I understood the reference.
