I was lucky enough to be able to demo the product already, and there is definitely some potential. Some of the things that really impressed me were:

    1. Speed - Project Comet is fast. No delay/lag with quickly zooming in and out at all.

    2. Repeat Grid - I think they solved this problem quite nicely. It's like the content generator for Sketch but built in.

    3. Prototyping - You are able to quickly switch to prototype mode, and see a preview really easily.

That might actually be a good reason for a lot of people to switch but in the past Adobe failed at creating performant cross platform products.

Not true, After Effects performs beautifully. It's just everything else that either sucked on one OS or sucked on the other.

Glad to see them stepping up to the plate. Sketch has been a breath of fresh air, but its moving too slow. Designers really need a tool like this, thats more all in one, including interactions and animations and useful deliverables from them.

Knowing Adobe's history of listening to their community and waiting years to make needed updates, my biggest concern is how slow Adobe moves.

Sketch may not update as frequently as they once did, but I can't count the number of times I've chatted with a human within a day of reporting a bug, and seen it fixed within the next update.

Eh, I disagree. Sketch looks like a native Mac app and Comet looks like an Adobe app with a light theme. The only similarity I see is that Comet has fixed and integrated property panels. Big whoop.

The big difference here is Comets toolbar being on the left–I wonder where they put layer handling or if they've possibly got a different paradigm at play.

There's this thing called "feedback" that companies like to get before launching a product. Not sure if you've ever heard of it, but sometimes it requires a few months notice.

This looks really cool, and I can't wait to try it but the part I'm mostly excited about is how positive & hopeful people are about this. Too often you open an Adobe thread, or just a thread about a new tool in general, and all you see is a sea of animosity.

It's nice to see the community unified in excitement! Don't let us down, Adobe ;)

Sketch has some amazingly powerful vector tools for a UI program. I have this uneasy feeling that Comet will have less powerful vector features, so as to not compete with illustrator.

      2 points
      • Ollie BarkerOllie Barker, over 7 years ago

Lets hope it integrates really well with Illustrator instead. Otherwise it'd just be doing Photoshop all over again. They should leave Illustrator for vectors, Photoshop for photos and Comet for UI. Making the apps link together will be key.

        1 point
        • Tom KrchaTom Krcha, over 7 years ago

Hi Ollie, definitely, we are looking at very tight integration with Photoshop and Illustrator via local workflows and we are really committed to make it as seamless as possible. Next to that, we are also planning to integrate products together via synced Creative Cloud Libraries, so you can easily transfer assets between the products and across the team.

One question they haven't answered is what file format will Comet use? If it's a new proprietary format, and the app is indeed OSX only, this could create a whole range or problems.

For Sketch, this was such a problem that it ended up creating an entire market for apps like Zeplin or Avocode.

    2 points
    • Tom KrchaTom Krcha, over 7 years ago

We’ll have more to say about the file format later, but our intent is to create a file format that is easy to inspect, so tools outside of Comet can pull information out of it easily. Stay tuned.

Since I work with tools that do code generation and project structuring based on designs (and interactions/logic) from other apps, I'd more than a little interested in knowing more about this.

Looks incredibly slick, I'm looking forward to checking it out.

I get the feeling that Adobe are confusing the prototype and design phases though. When you're prototyping, final look and feel don't matter. In fact they get in the way.

The reason why tools such as Balsamiq are useful for prototyping is that they actively discourage the use of images, colors etc in the prototyping phase.

Still keen to kick the tires when it gets released though.

    2 points
    • Tom KrchaTom Krcha, over 7 years ago

Hi Sophie, you will be able to combine basic visual components and build wireframes in Project Comet as well, without really skinning or visually polishing them.

Would you have any proposal how would you like it to work?

      Thanks

Looks promising. I hope they don't disappoint with the vector tools though, as Sketch has a really powerful set of features that I use often.

Also, I wonder how the layers work. I never saw a layer panel during any of the demos.

    2 points
    • Bruno BarrosBruno Barros, over 7 years ago

I thought the same thing... no layers in the demos. I thought that was weird since organising layers is such a big part of the work when dealing with apps like Photoshop and Sketch.

Reserve judgement until you need to use it for a real project. Adobe's CC is getting saturated with software that is done better by someone else, for cheaper.

When Muse was first announced there was such excitement. In truth none of us actually use it – those who do say that it doesn't produce good enough code.

With Comet the issue could be similar. Exciting at first, but sadly let down by implementation when producing actual work.

    • Tom KrchaTom Krcha, over 7 years ago (edited over 7 years ago )

      Hi Thomas,

Project Comet is focused on communicating your design idea with your stakeholders (clients, team, etc.). We are not planning to generate code from the prototypes as we learned that it is very tricky to support everyone's specific needs (such as different frameworks, etc.). However you will be able to share the prototypes with other people very seamlessly. We will be sharing more about how it works later this year.

I'd also like to understand what are your challenges when you design and what do you think we should do better.

      Thanks

Looks great, but at the end of the day all this tools promise more than them really offer.

For some time now, the design process has become in a bored and stressed task. And the principal cause is because the computer software can't go hand in hand (velocity) with our mind. The excess clicks, the panels chaotic, the oversaturated options, all this and even more, makes that design already don't been fun and ludic.

I hope that "Comet" can change the panorama, but sincerly seems more of the same.

In all this years I've collected many ideas about how should be an ideal software design, and I hope some day find a time and the correct developer, to make it happen.

    • Tom KrchaTom Krcha, over 7 years ago

Hi Hanu Man, we are sharing Project Comet early so to get feedback from designers. We really want the tool to belong to the community and you guys can help us shape it. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on how you imagine an ideal UI/UX design tool.

        1. Design without layers: In the web the elements are positioned like layers? Obviously no! But why we insist with the layered system? All elements in web are boxes/containers and would be great that we could design with this approach. At first glance Comet doesn't have a layer system and its "Repeat Grid" is insane, a very great solution, even so, all the design elements are totally "floating".

        2. Honest Tools: It is ilogical that if I design for web, all my stuff are encapsulated in a propietaries formats like .psd .ai .sketch. Maybe Comet not must generate code, but maybe whether could use the same (code) rules with which all websites are coded. Nowadays CSS is pretty powerful, so ... is really necessary that all tools add an extra level of abstraction? We need tools that allow us "design" with CSS, that's all!

        3. Complete Workflow: Is great that Comet offer us an additional "space" to liven up our designs. I totally agree with have a space for design and other to add interaction but ... what about the initial stage or the first iterations of our designs? Could be useful a space with fast and simple tools, that allow us generate and explore a bunch of sketches, focusing on the content instead of the visual aspect. Check out to the WriterPro's workflow

Massively disappointing that they're focusing it only on being available on Mac and have no plans or schedule for a Windows version where after killing Fireworks and seeing Sketch take big chunks out of the Mac designer market Windows users are left somewhat in the dark here while the Mac market has another app.

The vectors pixels creating a stir in the market, but i see this as evolution of design tools. Sketch give good time to Adobe to come up 'something'. It will be interesting as designer rolling out design in their favourite tools and at the back burner the competing companies, keep scratching their hand to keep/win the customer base.
