"What the iOS7 share button could look with rounded corners"
Riveting.
Why exactly is this better? How do you justify the 'inconsistency' you note?
No. This is what it should look like http://cdn3.iconfinder.com/data/icons/pictofoundry-pro-vector-set/512/Share-512.png
I'm personally of the opinion that all we're doing with iOS 7 is taking something which is badly designed (and lets face it - had it been submitted anonymously to dribbble before the reveal, it'd be seen as below par).
Here, I've taken the viewpoint of "I accept that this terrible new design is going ahead", but still noticed an inconsistency, so thought I'd point out my improvement to it. But that's hard to put into 140 characters (including a link).
I absolutely agree that the iOS 6 share button is better.
The icons are below par, but after using iOS 7 for the past week I can safely say the rest is a big improvement over iOS 6.
people share what they love.
Often times I'll share something I hate, but feel passionately about. Example: I wouldn't 'Love' an article about a tragedy, but I might want to share it to increase its visibility. In this case, tapping a heart shaped icon would be very inappropriate.
This.
love and hate are the same thing. the reason the heart works is because people share what they are passionate about.
My point is that, as a user, it would feel wrong to tap a heart icon when sharing something I fundamentally dislike. The traditional share icon works much better, in my opinion.
We're all used to the iOS 6 share icon. It's a matter of time for us to adapt the new iOS 7 icon. Let's move on.
I still prefer the iOS6 share button.
I'd like to hear people's thoughts on what improvements the new icon has over the old one.
It doesn't make sense in static screenshots but when you actually use it I think it's far easier to understand than the previous icon. The new one indicates that when you press it that a menu will slide up from the bottom, which it does. The old one didn't really have any relevance. To me it looked like some kind of 'open in new window' button.
That being said, it doesn't work as well on the iPad as the menu doesn't slide up.
And honestly does anyone really think Apple would just change the icon for the sake of it? They could of easily made the edges thinner to fit in with iOS 7 but they didn't because they think every change through and choose the best one.
I think the Android share icon is far more unique and recognisable.
“And honestly does anyone really think Apple would just change the icon for the sake of it?”
Yes.
Considering Apple have changed (virtually) every icon in iOS 7, I'd say Apple are just changing icons for the sake of it.
I don't think the icon is easier to understand than the previous icon. Many (most?) users use more than one operating system in addition to iOS, and the pre-existing "Share" button is already fairly well-used and understood (for example, in OS X, including Mavericks). A strong symbol needs to be understood in a variety of contexts and environments, and here, the new symbol fails: it only really makes sense in one situation. Symbols are like logos: they become better over time, as they're worked into our visual language. If companies shift and change interface symbols arbitrarily, it takes time for users to relearn the language, which can be pretty frustrating.
I don't like it. It's too thin for a mobile screen. Also, it truly needs re-invation. This is just a re-interpretation of an old icon. Too bad.
