Why don't they use spotify.com for this? (e.g. spotify.com/foundthemfirst or foundthemfirst.spotify.com)

Because name.com (https://www.name.com/purchase/hosting) gives you a free domain name if you get hosting.
Because they hire agencies to do projects like this, and it is much easier and less expensive to have the agency manage everything rather than trying to integrate it into Spotify's .com.

I'm pretty sure a company like Spotify have developers who know how domain names work.
No doubt! But speaking from my experience at ad agencies, this is just the way some companies do it.
