Ask DN: If you don't use an Apple brand display, what's your monitor of choice?

8 years ago from , ⚡️Design

It's been a while since I've used an external monitor but I'm looking for recommendations on a 27" or 30". I've always liked BenQ and Dell monitors but am open to other brands.

Qualities I'm looking for:

  • Great for design (color profile, high resolution (HD), etc...)
  • multiple I/O options but prefer HDMI
  • Tilt/Rotate

Thanks in advance, guys <3

Dell U2713H. Expensive but one of the best investments I had ever made.

+1 for this, even though I use the previous model. Dell seem to make pretty solid monitors. I'm using two with a mount clamped to my desk, allowing me to adjust and rotate easily while keeping lots of desk space.

Edit: I'm using two 23.5" displays, rather than one 27".

Using an Ultrasharp U2311H right now, planning to shift to a 2713/2715 soon. Dell Ultrasharps are pretty solid monitors.

I've been using an Asus PB278QR 27" as my main monitor for a few months and it's great. I got it for a reasonable price and the colours are fantastic. I recently ordered a second one and having the pair on my desk is a fantastic amount of screen real estate to work with. If I was buying today though I would probably go for a 28" or 30" 4k screen for that crisp HiDPI experience, I've heard good things about both the Dell and Asus options.

    PB278QR

The PB278QR has HDMI 1.4, DisplayPort, Dual Link DVI,and VGA. Colour is vibrant and accurate with some calibration, inbuilt speakers are acceptable. Stand swivels, rotates, and tilts and has VESA mount points. I'd highly recommend it!

I've really liked the Monoprice house brand I've been using. I did a bunch of research and the one I bought which isn't available anymore was using the same UHD LG panel (2560x1600px) that Apple uses in the Thunderbolt displays. I assume the newer ones are as good if not better.

Very few features esp in the stand but you can always buy a monitor arm desk mount from them too.

I went with Asus PB279 4k. In my opinion, it's 4k or bust once you have had a HD display. It's minimal, adjustable, and has 0 issues. I would prefer a 16:10 monitor, they are superior, but I'm overall impressed at this, and how smooth it runs on a late 2013 Macbook Pro at 4k.

It does not have much tilt and sadly no rotate, but I recently picked up the LG Ultrawide (LG34UM95) and love it. I did a bunch of research and waited for a while before actually making the move, but I love this thing and it has changed my workflow for the better. It has great connection options and fantastic specs. I'd definitely recommend it and I think my Apple Thunderbolt pails in comparison.
