Much less spendy than I expected.
They did it right.
This is like a nerdy, expensive christmas.
Lovely. The price ain't that bad.
From what I understand, you also have to purchase a license for each font individually (after the first five, which are free). Gotham would be $150 for the web-only license + $99 per year. Am I understanding that correctly?
Hi Ryan.
It depends on which Gotham package you purchase (after using your free fonts). But your math is correct, if you purchase one of the full Gotham bundles.
Are the screensmart fonts better for mobile use than their standard counterparts? Even with retina?
ScreenSmart fonts are built for using at sizes <= 18px, and multipurpose for anything larger. Size is the primary deciding factor. Otherwise they both look great on mobile/retina!
How does this compare to typekit?
The only reason to use it would be because of their fonts. Typekit has more technical experience and a larger and cheaper collection.
Not entirely true. They seem to have raised the standard as far as build quality of these fonts, which is why it took so long I imagine. The reason to use typekit would be a larger selection and cheaper price but not because of quality.
This is also entirely CSS based, whereas typekit is JS based. Should see noticeable difference in speed and reliability.
They make it sound like the cloud catalog includes more than just H&FJ fonts: "You’ll find the entire H&FJ collection available for both desktop and web use, plus hundreds of new ScreenSmart fonts designed especially for the web." Can anyone verify whether this is the case?
Hiya Jake. Sorry for the confusion. The catalog contains only H&FJ fonts. ScreenSmart fonts are a new type of font specifically designed for the browser. You can find more detailed information here: http://www.typography.com/cloud/the-fonts/#ssm-concept
Not all fonts we offer have SSm counterparts, but most do. The fonts that do will have a "ScreenSmart Fonts" tab on their Styles page: http://www.typography.com/fonts/archer/styles/
Now we wait for Gotham Serif. Ahhhhhh.
