Just wondering...

If you can’t afford Photoshop, don’t use it (there are cheaper alternatives, if you need them).

If you’re making money by using Photoshop, then you have no excuse — pay for your tools.

I agree with Marc. However every single designer without exception (Unless their parents bought it for them) has pirated software. I used pirated Photoshop for years. I sort of equate not pirating Adobe products with becoming successful. I buy them now, it's a point of pride with me. Or in my younger days using works copy on my personal machine.

People say I shouldn't have used Adobe tools I didn't pay for, however they only reason I would even consider buying Photoshop is because I used it for a year or more without paying. If I had only use the 30 day trial back in the day… I wouldn't have purchased it.

It might not be politically correct, but I want to be honest. Just make sure when you get a big check from a client, you already realize part of the check needs to go to pay for the tools you used to create your artwork. You can also look into buy a student copy of Adobe products for $5 on many college campus. Or buy used copy off craiglist (with a real box and cd only)

Honestly if you are bootlegging it, you are not a professional designer.

If you aren't making enough money from design to pay for a Creative Cloud subscription, it's time to go back to flipping burgers.

I totally agree. With how cheap it is to have EVERY application that Adobe creates, you should not even be considering a bootlegged copy.

When I was a student I bootlegged everything. When I set up my own business I paid for Photoshop, it just didn't seem legit otherwise. I think CC offers a much more affordable solution to having to purchase outright, then regularly upgrade.

Since they started with a subscription I'd not even consider a bootleged version of PS.

With the increasing price drops provided with Adobe Cloud Creative, Bootleg shouldn't be considered an option. On the precipice that you are building a business with these people, you have an even stronger reason not to pirate. The software is providing you a valuable return for you to make your daily living for. Even if you have a stance for or against Adobe, the fact remains that the software is integral to your workflow and your group's income.

If you want to save some money, you can definitely explore alternatives from open-source Gimp to Pixelmator and Acorn or Artboard. Of course, at the end of it all, you get what you pay for. And in that respect, Photoshop is worth every penny.

Professional designers that respect themselves and take their work seriously should invest - even just as a gesture of appreciation for having the ability to use great tools over the years.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to use CC through my work account, at home. Seems to work just fine as long as I don't have apps open on both computers at the same time.

Your legally allowed to use it on 2 computers for exactly what you mention.

Creative Cloud makes it more affordable than ever.

If I didn't want to pay for Creative Cloud, I could probably get away with Sketch and Pixelmator, for under the price of 2 months of Creative Cloud (in AUD).

Adobe have very reasonable student prices, so I’m not sure that’s an acceptable excuse.

also, your work should give you a copy if you need it for work.
