Youtube introduced a new video player with transparent UI to give more area for video and provide less distraction from the video content, the most important part.
I think it looks great and thought I'd share it here.

It seems as though they thickened up the icons that are being used for the player as well. All in all, it's pretty nice.
I agree! The icons are much more legible now and easier to click on.

Maybe a tad. But definitely an improvement over what it was before.

They also put in a slightly opaque black shadow on the bottom to help the contrast of the icons.

My favorite part: when you click the Settings icon, it rotates slightly (like a gear) to indicate an active state.
A typical button state approach is darkening/fading or brightening buttons… this wouldn’t work since the video chrome is now transparent.

I have been using this for a few months with a little cookie-hack and have really enjoyed the new design. It is surprising how much more open it feels. The transparency in the progress bar and its narrow width also contribute to the openness.
Here's one thing I would change for a better experience.

They've removed the Add to Watch Later button so while it's nice not having the player in the way of the video it's a step down for me.
You can add a video to your Watch Later playlist with the "Add To" button below the uploader's profile picture. I use that feature a lot so I was disappointed to see it gone from the video player.
Type in 'awesome' while watching a video, and have the player controls in focus.
The share interface is also really nice - transitions nicely and auto-pauses, then when closed, auto-resumes.
Auto-pausing? I hadn't even noticed that, nice catch. I'll have to try that out.

Great! This interface are much more usable!
I'll be honest, I still find it annoying I have to click 3 times to change the quality. It used to be two, was much better.

Agreed, all in all looks cleaner and really nice update.
Side note though, am I the only one that still would like to see an increased playback speed function/option?

Wow, huge change there, looks much nicer now.
I think it just looks more modern to us now. Eventually this too will look dated. And had they launched this new one when they launched the previous one it probably wouldn't have felt so nice. Much of the web is moving out of boxed constraints these days and I think that's why we perceive the new design as being nicer.
That said I like it a lot. :D
