How Instagram closed my account and gave it to a football celebrity (medium.com)

Instagram terms of use: "General Conditions - 1. We reserve the right to modify or terminate the Service or your access to the Service for any reason, without notice, at any time, and without liability to you."
Even if it's in their terms of service, it's an incredibly dirty move in this case.
Actually, it's not, that's why it's on their terms and conditions.
Just because they wrote it down does not mean it isn't dirty.
But how can you say it's dirty when you "accepted it". If you find something unacceptable, or non-ethical you should not accept unless it becomes a basic necessity, in my opinion.
Just because I accepted it doesn't mean it's not a crappy rule. What do you think I'm going to do? Throw my hands up and say "Guess I'm not going to use this product that all my friends are using and asking me to join because I disagree with this one minor broad statement in their ToS that may or may not even affect me."
They actually do stuff like this quite a lot. The people I know who've had similar interactions with them have also received no response. One of them is even the daughter of a relatively well-known professional athlete and they've de-activated her accounts on 4 separate occasions. No TOS violations, no spam, no nudity, etc. I guess the people at Instagram are just dicks.
I don't understand why this is on DN.
SCUM LIKE YOU BELONG IN JAIL!
.edit: Downvote? Didn't even know that was possible. Guess this type of humor is unwanted. Duly noted.
The 1% just downvoted you. It's a thing.
All good. Got a bit bummed about being on -1 for a fair while :]
Someone from Twitter get me @joeblau pls :)
Know all to well the perils of having the same name as a footballer...
a low league footballer with my name posted some dick shots, I still get around 50 followers a month adding me thinking I'm him....true story :/
Looks like he got his account back, the BBC picked up on it;
The joy of closed profit driven networks that have to answer to VCs.
I'm scared now. My account is @eriksen and apparently some football player has the same last name. I get a ton of notification through out the day, of people tagging me on sport pictures. It's funny how people just assume his account is @eriksen without checking first.
If Instagram was behind this, its a very weird move. Its disappointing how people think that actions like that can accomplish more than clear communications and kind words.
I had my @Chase twitter handle taken from me after I refused to sell it. Welcome to the club.
A really good example of what happens when a company's marketing/PR arm gets involved in manually making decisions that undermine the underlying system the tech/design teams have established.
Have you considered that this might be an automated closure after someone in the celebrity's camp complained, followed by instagram's marketing/PR arm actually fixing the problem?
Just saying: you could swing that line of thinking both ways, and the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
Also, never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity.
