Showoff your menubar

8 years ago from , Senior Product Designer

Hey all, I'm curious about the tools that other designers use on a daily basis. It'd help me or anyone else to learn and explore new ones. So here I'm sharing my menubar.

  1. Sip (http://theolabrothers.com/)
  2. Display maid
  3. Numi (numi.io)
  4. Chrome notifications
  5. f.lux (http://theolabrothers.com/)
  6. Dropbox

plus 1 for this. To me, this is a pitfall for Macs. Some apps really don't need the accompanying menu bar icon to begin with.

Did you see that El Capitan is going to break this. System Integrity Protection is going to prevent system things like battery, notification center, etc. from being hidden.

Hopefully, they figure out a fix before it launches in the fall.

Agreed – when I'm plugged in at work, this is what my menu bar looks like:

        My Chrome BTT settings:

        • 3-finger left/right = back/forward in history
        • 3-finger up/down = switch back/forward in open tabs
        • rotate right = refresh

Scary, but what things do you have setup with it, please give me your secrets. I promise I will bow.

I think the most significant settings would be:

        • 5 finger click: sleep computer
        • 4 finger click: Launch "Walk Away" script (which is an applescript that pauses any music or podcasts and puts my display to sleep)
        • Pinch Out: Enter Fullscreen
        • Pinch In: Exit Fullscreen
        • Three finger click: CMD + Click (for opening links in new tabs, among other things)

You can download my settings and import them as your own in BTT, if you'd like. And here's that applescript in case you're interested.

You can ditch that Chrome icon by selecting 'Hide Notifications Icon' in the main Chrome menu. (It's right below 'Warn Before Quitting')

    • Jonathan KratzkeJonathan Kratzke, 8 years ago

FYI on Chrome Notifications: if you're running latest version (I'm on 43.0.xx—I don't know when they added this), you can choose to hide the Notifications icon by going to the menu item "Chrome -> Hide Notifications" — it worked like a charm for me!

I agree with you on this. Anything that changes the calibration of a display is not good for design.

Personally, I just turn it off when I need to focus on color. I don't mind the warmed colors when laying out text, etc.

Because I'm usually not working on design stuff that late at night anymore. maybe emails and planning but usually not pixel pushing. If I am, just use disable for an hour or until sunrise in the menu.

        My main likes:

        1. You can hit a command, click and drag want you want then annotate on top with arrows and text.
        2. Hit the shortcut in an app like Photoshop and it'll upload your design.
        3. It doesn't wait for the image to be uploaded before giving you a link. So you can hit the command, then almost instantly paste a link somewhere (Slack :)) and it'll upload in the meantime.

Checkout there site, its down at the moment. Not sure why.

Also, for the people using Sip and having to put up with that bug that fucks up all of your windows, ColourSnapper 2 is out and unlike Sip, it will leave your windows alone.

Edit: ok im a idiot, seems its a lot easier than I thought, must have been updated since the last time I tried to do it.

    Not much going on here:

    • Dropbox - surprisingly i don't use it much, but I have to keep it for work.

    LTR:

    1. Awareness - so that I remember to stand up and move every 45 minutes
    2. Breeze - window management - got it for free once, so I kept using it, but Spectacle is just as good and free! these apps will get kinda obsolete with El Cap, but that's a different story..
    3. 1Password - doh!
    4. FileShuttle - because I got tired of cloud sharing apps like CloudApp adding constraints and becoming paid. this one is hooked to my VPS via FTP... easy to setup, works great!
    5. f.lux - mentioned in other comments, a must have
    6. OSX volume
    7. WiFi
    8. Time Machine
    9. Battery (I must keep the percentage, because my 6y old battery is sometimes draining fast)
    10. ItsyCal - because I don't need Fantastical, and because Day-0 developer refused to update it for Mavericks' Dark Mode... so I also have to keep next item which is...
    11. OSX time
    12. Spotlight - only because I can't remove it from the menubar, and I use Alfred vigorously!
    13. OSX notifications.

PS. this Markdown editor is playing tricks with me

PS2. when I show Markdown cheatsheet in Google Chrome, I can't close it.

    3. Wifi - for quick setup in coffee shops
    4. Adobe CC
    5. Caffeine - to keep my mac from sleeping
    6. Color Oracle - for color blind proofing
    7. Dropbox
    8. Google Drive

I redesigned Caffeine's & Color Oracle's icon to make them retina friendly and consistent with the other icons.
