Cameron, I was at Squares and was delighted to see your schedule (being so family-oriented) during your talk. Being a new mom and younger professional, it's been on my mind lately how other professionals with families juggle it all. Really enjoyed your talk at Squares.

    Here's my schedule:

    • 6-6:30 — Wake up and get myself ready
    • 7:15 — Baby wakes up, nurses; get him dressed
    • 7:45 — Leave for work, eat breakfast in car, drop kiddo off at daycare
    • 8:30 — Arrive at work/check email
    • 9 — Team stand-up
    • 9:15 — Pump
    • 9:35 — Work
    • 11-11:30 — Lunch
    • 11:30 — Work
    • 12:30 — Pump
    • 12:50 — Work
    • 3:30 — Pump
    • 3:50-5 — Work
    • 5:30 — Arrive home/nurse baby
    • 6-7 — Dinner and clean-up
    • 7-8:15 Family time
    • 8:15 —Nurse baby to sleep, personal time
    • 10-10:30 — Husband and I go to sleep
    • 12a — Baby nurses
    • 3:30a — Baby nurses

    Repeat!

    Shout-out to parents who have a 24-hour day :)

Suggestion: Use Markdown (* + space) to style your schedule in a list. Too late for mine, DN doesn't allow editing.

from your schedule it looks like you only get about 6 hours of sleep, is that enough for a productive day? i've been pushing to get about 8 hours of sleep and I thought that wasn't enough yet. :o

        I believe it's 6 hours if you're over 18 and 8 for under.

In hindsight, I should have prefaced this post stating that it wasn't meant to encourage all of us to work even longer hours or get even less sleep.

In my case, I've been functioning on 5-7 hours of sleep for a long time. That's just how my body operates. Doesn't work for everyone.

    • 6:00/6:30am - Wake up (or be woken up by my son)
    • 6:30am - Read, shower, get ready
    • 7:15am - Head to work (listen to podcasts or music, read on the way, or do some work on the train)
    • 8:45am - Get coffee
    • 9:00am - Work
    • 12:30–1:00pm - Lunch
    • 5:00pm - Head home
    • 6:30pm - Dinner
    • 7:00pm–8:30pm - Family time/church
    • 8:30pm - Put kids to bed
    • 9:00pm - Time with the wife/extracurricular or personal stuff
    • 10:00/11:00pm - Sleep

One thing my wife and I have done since we’ve gotten married that has really helped us is having a dedicated, no-excuse date night once a week—we get a baby sitter and go out for at least 1.5 hrs. If we have baby-sitter issues or just can't leave the kids alone (i.e. having a newborn), we morph it into a family date night.

Thumbs up on a weekly date night, Jonathan. We're not as good as we should be, but we also try to get out each week. Saturday we saw the Sarasota Orchestra together, although it's pretty rare we do something that substantial.

      • Jonathan SuhJonathan Suh, 8 years ago (edited 8 years ago )

Seeing an orchestra is a great idea!—will definitely note that for a future date. Our dates are usually nothing elaborate as well—going out for dinner, then going shopping for clothing or something for the home at a Home Depot or Lowes, or stopping for dessert on the way home—but it’s wonderful to get to spend a few moments alone and talk without kids

Sounds like we need to double-date. Most of our dates are very similar to yours...

    • 8:30ish - Wake up ah-natur-al, lay in bed lazily
    • 9:00 - Breakfast, shower, lounge around lazily
    • 9:50 - Walk to work
    • 10:00 - Start work
    • ??? Lunch in here somewhere
    • 6:00 - End work / walk home
    • 6:10 - 11:00 - Hangout with my wife (this time slot is sometimes interrupted by necessities, such as going out to buy groceries)
    • 11:30ish - Bedtime

Sometimes I get motivated to exercise, have personal study, etc., but those never seem to have any permanence (I struggle with laziness).

My wife and I are will be having our first baby in a few weeks, so I'm assuming (based on looking at other schedules here) that my current schedule is going to change drastically.

I'm a big fan of Offscreen Magazine, and especially it's 'A Day in the Life Of' section (it's essentially the same idea as this daily schedule topic)

Long story short, I recently updated my website, (maxwelllind.com), and included a section directly inspired, borrowed from them. I try to write every now and then, and can honestly say I enjoyed putting this together...I'd encourage you all to do the same.

    • 6:30am - Alarm plays music from Skyrim soundtrack by Jeremy Soule (much better than “BEEP BEEP BEEP”)
    • 7:00am - In-person client meetings today? Shower. No meetings? Less shower.
    • 7:30am - Feed dog, chase dog with 15-month-old daughter, help wife feed daughter her breakfast, dog gets food that drops on the floor.
    • 8:00am - Kiss wife goodbye, make “long” work commute to at-home office, put on noise-cancelling headphones to block out sounds of daughter still chasing dog.
    • 8:01am - Fire up computer, read emails, check news, general business upkeep (new leads, invoices, mail, etc.), review daily schedule in TeuxDeux, and often catch up with my parents and/or brothers with a phone call around this time as well.
    • 8:30am - 9:00am - Client work, lots of coding, some design.
    • 11:45am - Lunch, client calls, errands. Time and weather permitting, walk the neighborhood with wife and daughter or go on a local hike.
    • 1:00pm - Back to work. This is when my productivity is greatest.
    • 3:00pm - Short break to stretch legs again, then more work.
    • 5:00pm - Dinner and family time. Depending on the season, there’s usually snow blowing or lawn mowing at least once a week.
    • 7:00pm - Workout. Admittedly, this is the activity that gets cut out when my schedule fluctuates, which is often the case when your’e self-employed.
    • 7:30pm - This time slot varies every day but most often it’s used to pursue side projects, personal writing, and hanging out with my wife. During the Milky Way season in our area (like right now), I might also take this time to prep camera gear for a night shoot.
    • 11:00pm - Covertly check on daughter sleeping in her crib with my iPhone’s light. Go to bed.

No two days are exactly alike, which I enjoy, but to make sure each day was well-rounded and felt accomplished, I came up with the Rule of One:

    • Get at least one thing accomplished. Even if I only finish one task that day, doing something is better than nothing.
    • Learn one new thing. I’ve never, ever been able to go through my news feeds and not find at least one useful article or tutorial to learn from.
    • Do one nice thing for someone else. It can be as simple as shoveling my neighbor’s steps or holding the door for someone at the store.

    • 9:00am Work
    • 11:30am Lunch
    • 5:30pm Head home
    • 6:30pm Family time and dinner
    • 8:30pm put kid to bed

    I always love these threads!

    heres mine:

    • 8:00am Alarm
    • 8:15 stop snoozing, rush out of the house and head to the gym on a boris bike I like to do early morning workouts, generally free weights and HIT training.
    • 9:30 cycle back from the gym and shower. I'm working on a new venture at the moment [Matterhorn.io](www.matterhorn.io) a project management tool designed for teams. I catch up with the rest of the team on Slack and plan out our day on Mattehorn (of course).
    • 1pm - Leave the house and head to a local coffee shop. I'm in Shoreditch, east london so there are literally 1000's within a mile.
    • 3pm - grab a bite to eat
    • 6pm - Head home, usually grabbing something for dinner on the way.
    • 7-8:30 - Cook and eat dinner. This is my down time, I love the process of preparing and cooking dinner its probably the only point in the day I'm not 'connected' to the world.
    • 9 - 12 - Research / Play on the internet.. a little more ;)
    • 1:30 - sleep time

I’m often wary when people share their personal schedules, because oftentimes I think people make them up in order to seem more put together/impressive than they really are. But since Cameron’s was so family-centric (like mine is) I'll give it a go ;)

    • 6-7am – Either my 8yo daughter comes into the bedroom or my twin 2yo boys wake up and I go get them from their bedroom
    • 7-8:10am – Change diapers, get all the kids fed, get daughter ready for school. If I'm going into the office for my dayjob I get myself washed & dressed, if I'm working from home I just get dressed ;)
    • 8:20am – Bus stop and then either I drive into work in Uptown Charlotte or I go back home
    • 9-9:30am – Email, Twitter, Slack. Loosely prep for the day.
    • 12 – Lunch with co-workers if I'm at work, with wife and boys if I'm at home
    • 1 – Back to work
    • 5 – If I'm at office I head home, If I'm at home I go get my daughter from the bus stop
    • 6-7 – Family dinner
    • 7-9 – Get boys ready for bed, homework with daughter, daughter gets her 30 mins of laptop time (either coding or, more often than I'd like, Minecraft ;), then reads until 8:30-9 and I sing her Ben Folds’ "The Luckiest" and put her to bed
    • 9-12ish – Do household chores, watch a show or two with my wife, Twitter, work on http://inlinehq.com

I'm also wary, too. Yet while our schedule varies daily as it does for everyone else, a fixed routine of school, soccer practice, etc. means that weekdays are pretty predictable (and therefore documentable) for our family.

Yeah, I realized that after reading yours. I, just like everyone else, always wish I could be more regimented in my daily work – but when I actually thought about my average day, I realized it is naturally regimented just from the fact that it's built around the fam.

Good way to start the day, thanks Cameron. Now back to work! ;)

Ha! My wife and I danced to it at our wedding, and I've sung it to my daughter for 8 years straight now.

She says she'll never get tired of it, but I know that one day she’ll of course grow out of it, so even though I've sung it over 2000 times I still try and relish every single one ;)

    • 7:30 or 8AM: Wake up. Let the dogs out. Shower (every other day). Brush hair & teeth. Pack lunch. Get dog food ready. Let the dogs back in.
    • 8:30AM: Latest I can leave for work and arrive on time. Commute is 20 minutes by car + 10 minutes walking. Going to experiment with biking one day this week.
    • 9:00AM to Noon: Check email, Basecamp, Forecast. Work on things.
    • Noon to 1PM: Lunch break.
    • 1PM to 6PM: Progressively get less productive as the day wears on.
    • 6PM: Walk & drive home.
    • 6:30PM to 10PM: Let the dogs out. Make & eat a meal. Flex time for house chores, errands, exercise, and hobbies.
    • 10PM-Midnight: Visit the boyfriend (or he visits me). Eat another small meal or snacks. Get ready for bed. Rinse & repeat.

It's not too different on the days when I work from home. I just wake up later and start my flex time earlier, due to no commute.

    • 7:00am-ish - 8:30am: Alarm, wake up, shower, making tea
    • 8:30am - noon: Work, check in with team, make calls, conduct interviews, meetings
    • noon - 1pm-ish: Lunch at the nearby Jamaican spot, fresh air and walkin' around
    • 1pm-ish - 3:00pm-ish: Nap #1
    • 3:00pm-ish - 8:00pm: More work, emails, calls
    • 8:00pm - 11:00pm: Personal time (TV, video games, etc.); depending on the night, I may just keep on working.
    • 11:00pm - 2:30am-ish: Nap #2
    • 2:30am-ish - 4:00am-ish: Email, other writing
    • 4:00am-ish - 7:00am-ish: Nap #3

This changes a lot if I'm in project mode, but generally speaking, this is a regular day without interruptions.

There should be some sort of schedule accountability network so we can hold each other to our ideal workdays. Mine is often broken before 8:00am, but here's what I've been aiming for:

    • 5:30am Wake up; cold shower (seriously, try it for a couple of days. It'll change your life)
    • 6:00 Read the Bible; pray; journal
    • 7:00 Breakfast
    • 7:30 Write
    • 8:00 Work on side projects
    • 9:00 Work for Fusion (the day job)
    • 12:30 Lunch
    • 1:30 Back to work
    • 5:00 Gym
    • 6:30 Dinner
    • 7:00 Work on side projects, or spend time with friends
    • 10:00 Read
    • 11:00 Try to get to sleep, but probably read some more

I've been slowly trying to turn myself into a morning person. My natural inclination is to work late into the night, so this schedule is often broken by Tuesday. Any suggestions you have for improving my consistency would be welcome; it seems like my willpower is at its lowest early in the morning, when I need to avoid the "snooze" button.

I don't think I could ever do a cold shower, especially in the morning. Maybe a hot shower and then end it with moving to cold? '

      1 point
      • Jordan KoscheiJordan Koschei, 8 years ago

The cold showers were awful for the first few days, but enough people recommended them to me that I pushed through. After day 4 or 5 they started to feel great. The shot of adrenaline first thing in the morning really helps set the tone for the day.

This article is what convinced me to try it, and they even talk about the benefits of starting hot and moving to cold.

Place your alarm away from your bed. This way you can't hit the "snooze" without getting out of bed. I've been a morning person for 2 years now, because of that little trick.

Your daily schedule looks like my dream goal... Especially 6AM one :). I'm curious about what you write in your journal. I need to do the same.

I've been focused on spiritual growth lately (I'm a practicing Christian... emphasis on the "practicing"), so the journal is mostly thoughts and insights brought up by praying and reading the Bible. It's usually pretty informal... I miss a lot of days, and plenty of my entries are just a sentence or two.

I've been taking notes when I read nonfiction occasionally, too - I find it helps me to make connections between ideas when I rewrite them in my own voice.

Yeah, it seems that people in Dallas can trickle in to work whenever they please, but they all try to leave work at the same time. I tend to stick to surface roads as the toll roads are rife with accidents.

The commute is a little better if I get to take the train in, but it will still take me 20+ minutes to make it the 5 miles from the train station to my house.

Wow, how do you guys go to bed so early? I'm not even IN bed until 1am and then I read for at least 30 minutes.

I guess I'm just used to surviving on 5-7 hours of sleep, probably not good for me.

This is an interesting topic, especially because since I went remote I'm trying to come up with a schedule/routine that gets me a sane and healthy balance between predictability and a little bit of randomness to spice things up.

With that, I've found that while being remote, it's impossible for me to have ONE schedule... I find myself with at least three: One will include an early morning workout, the other will include a run at the end of the day, and the other will involve going to a co-working space so I can keep the social skills going!

    So typically:

    • 6h00: Wake up and run to the climbing centre
    • 7h00: Climb for a bit more than an hour, take the tube home
    • 9h00: Make a big breakfast (breakfast depends on which kind of day I'm having/will have... so there's no fixed breakfast routine)
    • 9h30: Start working from home
    • 12h30: Make lunch
    • 13h30: Go out and work in a coffeeshop
    • 16h30: Go back home and have a snack
    • 18h00: Finish work; work on personal projects or just read articles/books
    • 19h30: Have dinner
    • 20h30: Work some more for personal projects, learn with tutorials, watch a TV show
    • 23h: Bedtime.

I find it very hard to automate my routine especially when I can either leave the house at 8am or at 13pm... even breakfast depends on what kind of day I'll be having.

One thing I noticed from being a remote worker though: staying home for a full day is NOT an option. I feel terrible, both physically and mentally if I don't leave the house for a big walk somewhere during the day.

Setting up a schedule was probably the best thing I've done for my freelancing self. My unorganized mess of tasks often left me paralyzed and apathetic but once I made dedicated room for all of my desired accomplishments I got much more effective and calm.

    • 6 – Wake up, make breakfast, check email, decide 3 MIT:s.
    • 7 – Commute to work, think of nothing
    • 8 – Have one hour developer related learning
    • 9 – Work on developer related MIT:s
    • 11 – Check email and do bundled up small tasks
    • 12 – Lunch + walk
    • 1.30 – Draw a story for leaveastory.com
    • 3 – Work on drawing related MIT:s
    • 6 – Spend time with friends/work out/have dinner
    • 10 – Sleep

The hardest part is the lunch walk. At least on days like yesterday when it rained sideways.

Thumbs up on a weekly date night, Jonathan. We're not as good as we should be, but we also try to get out each week. Saturday we saw the Sarasota Orchestra together, although it's pretty rare we do something that substantial.

As a high school student... this is my typical day:

    • 6:00 - 6:30 — Alarm
    • 6:40 — Wake up, get dressed, shove breakfast down throat
    • 6:50 — Get on bus, cram on homework and/or tests
    • 7:10 — Arrive at school
    • 7:10 - 2:35 — School (Typical 8 periods/day schedule)
    • 12:56 - 1:24 — School lunch
    • 2:35 — Get on bus, sleep on bus
    • 2:40 — Arrive back home

From there, my afternoon schedule forks into three different possibilities:

On a normal day, I can usually squeeze in 6-8 hours of freelance work and get school work done

    • 2:40 - 3:00 — Check the internet
    • 3:00 - 4:00 — Afternoon nap OR robotics OR club meeting OR gym OR sports
    • 4:00 — Client/School work
    • 6:45 — Eat dinner/family stuff
    • 7:00 - 12:00 — Client/School work
    • 12:00 - 12:25 — Shower and hygiene stuff
    • 12:25 - 1:00 - Fall asleep doing school work

Sometimes I accidentally fall asleep for 9 hours in my afternoon nap, usually because I didn't set an alarm. Sometimes I do it intentionally because I have a meeting with a client across the world. It happens once a month and I hate when it happens. :/

    • 2:40 - 3:00 — Check the internet
    • 3:00 - ? — Afternoon nap that turned into a 9-hour sleep
    • ? - 12:00 — Eat dinner and check the internet
    • 12:00 - ??? — Cram school/client work
    • ??? - ??? — Fall asleep again

If I feel like working in an office or have a meetup in Center City Philly that night:

    • 2:40 - 3:10 — Check the internet
    • 3:10 — Walk to train
    • 3:20 — Ride the train and freelance on train
    • 3:50 — Walk to office/coworking space
    • 4:00 - 6:30 — Work/freelance from office/coworking space
    • 6:30 - 9:20 — Meetup
    • 9:20 — Walk to train
    • 9:30 — Ride the train and freelance on train
    • 10:10 — Arrive home
    • 10:30 - 12:00 — Client/School work
    • 12:00 - ? — Shower and hygiene stuff
    • ??? - ??? - School work
    • ??? - ??? - Maybe a Skype call
    • ??? — Fall asleep

7:35AM - Wake up to the soothing sound of my SleepAlarm and read Yahoo! New Digest or train my brain with Elevate.

8:30AM - Grind one of the various coffees at my disposal and brew a V60 or Chemex worth of coffee depending on how easily I woke up.

9:00AM - Begin the work day.

10:00AM - Start spinning one of my various Rdio playlists to keep up the momentum

    12:00PM - Contemplate eating lunch.

12:02PM - Decide that it definitely time to eat and cobble something together at home.

2:05PM - Start the routine drive to school for one of several of my last couple design studios before graduation.

3:45PM - Leave class for Condesa Coffee to grab a mid-day brew. Ethiopian is my staple.

5:30PM - Finish up at school and decide what dinner plans are.

6:30PM - Finally decide what to make for dinner and who to eat it with.

7:05PM - Start on whatever current school project that is probably due tomorrow.

9:00PM - Get distracted by personal projects and snacks.

1:00-3:00AM Set my alarms and immediately fall to sleep.

Not an interesting schedule but here goes

    • 5:00–5:30 alarm (I use the sleep cycle alarm app)
    • 5:30 get ready
    • 6:20 bus to work
    • 7:00–7:10ish walk to work
    • 7:10–7:20 breakfast/personal projects
    • 7:45 work
    • 1:30 lunch
    • 2:30 work
    • 4:20 leave work
    • 5:40 home
    • 6ish food, rest, whatever
    • 9:30–10 bed

I kind of work round the buses which is why my start/end work times may seem a little odd. I get quite an early bus to avoid sitting in traffic for an extra half an hour.

Man you people get up super early! I work at home so I can at least humblebrag about my schedule. This is a typical weekday:

    • 7:30 or 8:00am alarm
    • Get ready, be online by 8:30am
    • At least two cups of coffee, eat something around 9:00am
    • Lunch whenever I have a break between meetings
    • Work until 2:00 or 3:00pm (office is EST so everything quiets down around then)
    • Gym from 3:00-4:00pm (3x a week)
    • Dinner at 5:00 or 6:00pm
    • Watch TV with wife, chip away at work for a few more hours
    • Bed around 10:00pm or later, depending on workload

No kids, no commute, and I've learned to say "no" to most side projects at this point, so I have a pretty good work/life balance.

    • 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm Leave for home.

    • 7:45 pm Arrive home (again...long commute).

    • 8:00 pm Dinner, hang out, chit chat with wife and other family.

    • 9:00 pm Start winding down and head for bed where I'll sit and look at a phone screen for a bit.

    • 10:00 pm or 11:00 pm Lights out.

    Tomorrow – Rinse, wash, repeat.

My commute is really rough right now. I really love where I work though so it's worth it for now until my wife and I find something closer.

I actually planned out my week on a calendar last night, partly to see what I need to do this week and also to make sure I'm spending my time where I should be.

    • 6:55am Alarm and get out of bed
    • 7-7:40 Shower and dress
    • 7:40-8 Breakfast and reading
    • 8-8:30 Free time
    • 8:30am-12:30pm Work. (I'm remote)
    • 12:30-1:30 Lunch and family
    • 1:30-5:30 Work
    • 5:30-6 Free time. Read. Personal stuff.
    • 6-7 Dinner and cleanup
    • 7-9:30 Family stuff. Weeknight events. Personal time. Sometimes exercise.
    • 9:30-10:30 Resist sleep. Think about all the things I didn't do but want to. Maybe read or work on cool stuff.
    • 10:30-11 Sleep...
