I wish more of Designer News was this thought-provoking.

Yup. Feels like this is the most (only?) sane article I've ever read on responsive design.

Its reassuring there are people like Frank Chimero thinking so deeply about web design. A truly awesome read.

In the last few paragraphs, he touches on some things that I've been thinking about recently -- regarding technology's over-reach, and how we might eventually tone it down. Great stuff.

Frank's blog posts always get me thinking, but then I always finish reading and wonder... "ok, so now what?"

    ... Maybe that's the purpose

I completely agree. It's kind of heart-wrenching to live on two planes: one as a designer who's inspired by the ideas brought up by this article, and the other as a designer who must contend with the daily, prosaic concerns of contributing to a actual business whose goal isn't to carry the field of web design forward.

"The consistencies establish best practices; they are proof of design patterns that play off of the needs of a common medium, and not evidence of a visual monoculture."

Is there a summary anywhere? I'm more for practical application than philosophy.

It seems like the emphasis is KISS, less CSS, and stick to straight forward design, or lack thereof. Similar to his site and his work which goes with one column, %'s rather than media queries, and a very clean simple setup.

Responsiveness is often overthought in web designs. It's nice to see a perspective of more simplicity, and less control enacted on the elements of a web page.

    These ideas are very good.
