Ask DN: Dealing with display differences between OS X and iPhone (gamma, etc..)

8 years ago from , Lead UX Designer @ Upserve

One annoying thing that I've always just dealt with was the difference in how colors display on my Macbook Pro vs my iPhone. Anyone know of an OS X display calibration profile that mimics the iPhone display?

I use Skala View to show my designs on device as I'm working. My computer display is for arrangement and details, iPhone display is for checking as i work.

I have a similar workflow with Sketch+Mirror. I use Forward for tunneling localhost to the web. I was hoping for an even shorter shortcut. :)

You could possibly set a workflow up in Photoshop where it would automatically output your work in different calibration settings or you turn on gamma warnings (pink if its out of range). I haven't done this in a while but its doable.

I don't know if this will help you, but I export a separate PDF specifically for iOS using a sRGB color profile. I wrote an article about exporting with InDesign, but you can apply the settings to any CC app. http://jony.io/2015/01/indesigns-erroneous-colors/

I don't know how important is that. I remember that with two seemingly equal iPhone 4, they could have different screen manufacturers, thus different gammas. I don't know if that is still the case. But also, different lightnings may have different impact on colour. Just stick to one and take care of contrasts. Maybe I'm too biased because on web design you can never know, but that's my policy.

I am designing a hybrid mobile app though. It will only ever be looked at on a mobile device, hence the desire to simulate my phone's colors on my laptop.
