Really nice article. I hate to be all visual here but I am in love with how pleasant the actual page looks. The marker sketches + the white space and subtle grays keep making me stare at this page.
Aww thanks Shawn! Glad those illustrations supported the reading experiences for you. :)
Love this, Jessica. Seems like confidence and empathy are at the heart of all these--definitely a powerful combination for all designers!
Speaking of jobs... we're building the digital future of agriculture, and we're hiring great product designers who want to come invent with us ;) We're YC-backed and well funded, we have a strong design culture, and we do work that really matters to farmers.
Shoot me an email if that sounds interesting: sam@farmlogs.com
Nice post, I really like honest blogging like this. Good luck finding your next gig.
:) I've been trying to exercise transparency and honesty. I believe people could help and support each other if we all just shared knowledge and experiences.
Nice post, Jessica! I came up to write a letter for Basecamp too but didn't have the brave to send. Moreover, it might not be a great fit for myself at this time. Like you said, finding a job might be like finding a soulmate. Good luck with your journey!
Would love to hear why you don't think you're a great fit at the time. Well hope your journey goes well too! Good things will come.
I really enjoyed your writing! I always admire when designers are really honest about how they navigate the field. I found myself in a similar place recently, leaving a full-time job in graphic design for an internship in UX, to learn a new skill. I'm so thrilled to be doing what I'm doing now, but it is always a bit scary to leave something you know for the unknown. Props to you for making the leap! All of the advice you gave is spot on from my experience - I often feel hesitant to reach out to the design community because I'm afraid of bothering someone or of someone saying no, but it's so true that you have to be open and reach out to move forward. Great advice!
Good luck! I'm confident you'll find something great.
Great post and good luck with the job hunt.
Interested in why you found the Zurb job to be a bad fit.
ZURB wasn't a bad fit. It just wasn't right for me at the moment. But email me hello@ohjessica.com.
Nice article, hit very close to home. Looking forward to hearing more about your journey.
Are you a freelancer/unemployed designer too Mitch? How's your journey going? :)
It's going pretty well at the moment I must say. I've been picking up lots of contracts (some are redesigns) which is keeping me busy. Although I'm constantly feeling "imposter syndrome" so it's hard to feel good about anything I design. I often question if I have a thick enough skin for it.
