Site Design: A Small Orange (asmallorange.com)

Unfortunately looks like it was made in a hurry. Lots of elements on the page are not appearing correctly and there are some really not thought-through choices (the white windmills making the white text impossible to read). Also really not feeling the drop shadow in the header.
Still love them for hosting though!
Hi - Zach from ASO. Thank you for your feedback on the new ASO website we pushed out last night. I appreciate your candor and suggestions. We will continue to iterate and improve the design with many of your suggestions as time goes on - we had many of these already on our list to tackle!
I love A Small Orange (they're my hosting provider), but the new design isn't doing it for me. Everything feels so big and spaced too far apart, which makes it hard for me to read. I definitely liked the old site better.
That said, they're still awesome and the new design seems on-brand, so it could get a lot better with some iteration, I think.
What happened? They also seemed to have made it harder to find the login button.
Used to really like the ASO design but... this is just no.
The entire design looks like it was made for 27" iMac's. I'm viewing on a 19" monitor right now and I can't even tell what I'm supposed to be looking at as I scroll. Everything is just way to big, especially the fixed header... The average hosting customer is going to be using a monitor around the size of or smaller than mine, not a giant iMac.
Edit: The giant header is even worse on my iPhone, and almost everything is either off-center or halfway off the screen.
It's definitely "on-brand," but the text is freakin' huge! I love big text, but I feel like it's about to punch me in the face.
seems unfinished. a lot of things are maddingly off-center, and i'm seeing white text on top of a white backgrounds. particularly https://asmallorange.com/hosting/
This is amazing. World, class.
kinda rude - there's probably a reason.
how would you like it if someone shat on your work?
Maybe a little blunt but I have my work shat on very regularly. It makes me a better designer. Theres a reason it feels unfinished? I'd love to hear.
probably because the people shitting on your work are clients that don't feel like your work is not suitable for their brand.
it was likely a soft launch. people in companies like to ship.
btw, i'd consider changing adding the 'interactive' to your job title on here, for a split second i thought you worked for a company, not a two-man wordpress customisation collective x
Thanks for taking the time to google me, and for this informative lecture your giving me! Have a lonely christmas dude.
Yeah, come on. No need for that.
Pretty sure there's only one rule here, and this breaks it. Remember this is a large, distributed community and you're only doing yourself a disservice in the end with unprovoked and aimless, negative comments.
Your right, I should have been more constructive, I just wasn't impressed at the clear lack of attention to detail from a company I was up until now, seriously considering buying hosting from due to their company values. How can you trust a company that can't even test a responsive site properly, whats their customer service like if their QA is so bad?
I was thoughtlessly negative, but still gutted the design is so poor.
Overall I think it's definitely on-brand.
The text overlapping the sketch-like elements makes some of the content hard to read. A login button at the top in the sticky nav would be a nice addition.
The brand itself isn't really scalable, though. As the logo gets smaller it gets pretty hard to read. I think the attitude is there, but with an abstract name the main goal should be to make the service painfully obvious.
This really feels like a design pushed halfway through development... love you guys at ASO but the old design was much more functional. Where's my link to the client center?
Also, this makes me think of Halloween. Anyone else have that reaction?
Do they provide SSH access on the shared hosting plans?
Yes, we do!
I may be the only one who likes the header's shadow. It lends a sort of artistic feeling to it, for me at least. Like the menu was written on top of the drawing beneath it. Overall it feels like the site was rushed, with breakpoint and alignment issues. But other people have already pointed that out, and I'm sure they know about it now.
One question though: Is the logo intentionally cut off at the top? And if so, why?
I like the overall look/character that they have established here, but this is very amateur, both in design and execution.
There's a lot of continuity between the old and new design; it still feels like "them." But the design needs a lot of adjusting.
Way to big header, it gets in the way of the information.
Huge header menu, which kinda comes courtesy of that crappy logo. Love the sub navigation pattern though
I actually really like that logo. It looks like it could be refined a bit, but I wouldn't say it's "crappy". Maybe it doesn't have enough drop shadow for you?
Its crappy because it can't be read at small sizes. Even on desktop I can barely read homegrown hosting. All of the shading effects/lines look messy and ragged at the smaller size, to complex for a logo, would benefit from more simplification.
Its a let down cause the rest of the site looks great
Why is the CTA white on large screens but orange on small screens? Weird.
Really like how much space each element has been given and the large call to actions. The subtle wooden texture words pretty well in the Happy Customers section and I also think the use of illustrations in the breakdown of hosting plans section.
You need to be careful with how the white text overlays on the windmills at certain breakpoints. I'd suggest making these two elements never meet, and scale the image where appropriate.
One small detail that I feel doesn't add to the footer is the 1 pixel orange divider line. That section would look more clearer without that, and the Malware-free badge.
Overall, a nice look and feel but could do with a bit more refinement in certain parts. Good work.
Not feeling the green outer glow :/ Apart from that the site is well designed in my opinion.
