    Gif = Graphic Interchange Format.

    Graphic = "G" not "Jraphic"

    Case closed, he should have learned grammar if he wanted it to be jif

      I think you mean pronunciation. It's Hard G vs Soft G. Gorillas vs Germany. Gin vs Git.

      I realize Graphic has a Hard G, but the way an acronym is pronounced does not have to be derived from the way the individual words are.

      I say give a nod to the intention of the inventor. The man used his time on stage receiving a life time achievement award to put the issue to rest.

    "JIF not GIF" says the guy who spelled it "GIF" not "JIF."

    The creator gave the intended pronunciation. It can be argued either way with gin, git, gift, giraffes, etc., but now the debate's over. Get over it.

      I don't think the debate is over at all. I'm of the firm belief that language can evolve and be changed by it's users, instead of being dictated by the person who coined the term. I think because the collective has deemed it gif with a hard g, the word has evolved, not to mention the fact that it's even made it into the dictionary with a hard g.

      Just look at Belvoir Castle in the UK. Even the the original word is pronounced Bel-vwah, the British started pronouncing it Beaver right back when it was originally built and that pronunciation is now the official pronunciation...

      Definitely not getting over it. I will continue to shun those that say jif. This guy has no say in the matter. It has been out of his hands since the day he invented it.

    If that was the case, should we start calling lossy image media "Gay-Pegs" now?

    Oh good lord what did I just say...
