Apple's Preview makes taking Notes in PDF a pain in Yosemite

8 years ago from , Lead UX Designer, Expedia

I was taking notes in Preview on Yosemite while reading an eBook and I am surprised to discover the low and terribly bad legibility offered by the notes in the sidebar preview.

OS X Preview - Notes

It is not only difficult to read but also to discover and keep track of them. In last version of OX X (Mountain Lion) it was pretty nice but however I am unsure if this is a bug or a very disappointing feature.

The Yosemite update to Preview is, I think, terrible. For years, I've used Preview as my default PDF viewer and for annotating design mock-ups. It's been fast and really easy. Now it feels buggy, and I really don't understand the reasoning behind the change to how the toolbar works. Previously, you'd select a tool (like arrow or box) and then click to place it where you wanted. Now, the moment to click the tool an object is dropped on the page and you then have to manipulate it to where you want it to go. It seems like a small change, but it feels more complex and nonsensical compared to how it used to work.

Ah, that only seems to happen in full screen mode. Seems like a bug to me.

Yes. I checked in regular mode and it looks fine again. Surely, it is a bug in fullscreen mode.

Yea, this is only an issue when using Preview fullscreen.

Preview is a powerful app, but it never seems like it receives proper attention from Apple — its features are either buried or have terrible usability.
