Ask DN: Where to get design feedback?

almost 9 years ago from , Front-End Engineer at Adaptive

I graduated college last year with a little design experience. I got a 3 month contract (basically an internship) to work as a designer. I want to do side projects to become a better designer, but I don't know where to show my work and get feedback on actual designs. Does anyone have any advice on where/how to show work and get feedback?

Thanks in advance!

Ocean is fairly active (although not really enough): http://ocean.ink/

Think it's missing that gamification element of collecting points for giving design reviews that you can "cash in" for a design review in return.

Five second test (http://fivesecondtest.com/) uses that system and seems to work pretty well.

Perhaps this is the kind of initiative that could be born on Assembly - https://assembly.com/. If anyone has the time to head it up, let me know, I'm on board.

Talk to people. Ask your colleagues, Skype a design buddy, heck show your friends and family (designers or not) and monitor their user experience. The bottom line is real discussions will always be more valuable than feedback from a website.

I've had some luck in checking out local meetups/design support groups in my city. Meet with people in your field in a casual situation. Meet people, get feedback, talk about the good/bad, maybe get some work out of it.

Although it's geared specifically toward web designs, I've found some value in http://www.criticue.com. Although (the last time I used it at least) the community wasn't dominated by sophisticated designers, it was a reasonable way to get design feedback from "normal" web users.

    Hey Eshan,

I’m actually working on a software project that’s dear to my heart; it’s all about helping creatives organize, collaborate and share the side projects they’re most excited about… something more than just show and tell.

Might you be interested in helping me test it?

It’s still a few months from launch, but I’m actively seeking passionate creatives looking to help build a better way to collaborate online.

Hadn’t seen this before, very interesting.

@Tyreil are you a member? I can’t tell if this is just a landing page to capture signups, or if there is actually a product.

I am a member. From the time I've spent with it, I think it's a pretty solid product. You upload your design, and other users can create 'hotspots' where they can leave feedback. Pretty similar to https://redpen.io/ except it's a community rather than a one-off link.

+1. I've been posting my work here and on Dribbble but haven't got much feedback. Would be great to find an active designer community.
