365/daily project suggestions

almost 9 years ago from , IT Project Leader // Web Developer

Now that we're about to start a brand new year I was thinking about starting (yet again…) a daily project. And here I am asking for suggestions.

Or… do you have already on ongoing? What is it?

Last year (2013) I designed an icon every day: http://sensibleworld.com/news/year-of-icons.

I took a year off, but am planning to do it again (with a slight twist) in 2015.

This is a really cool project! How did you decide what type of icon you were going to design?

Before starting the project, I decided that I wanted ALL of the icons to be consistent in tone and style so that I could release them all as a single set when the year was over.

Really neat idea. Do you do a lot of them in front or actually design one every day?

I design one every day. (Though it's often for the next day.) So, tonight I'll design the icon I post for tomorrow.

And occasionally I work a little ahead if I know I'm going to have a busy period, or will be away for the weekend.

This year I'm designing a poster every day together with a poet who writes a short original sentence for it, also every day ;) http://www.apostereveryday.com

This must be pushing yourself "to the limit". How do you get your daily inspiration?

Completely, I am literally going a bit mad, and some days is really hard to find the inspiration or the energy for it, but well, I try to keep my eyes and my mind really open to have inspiration from every single thing!

A book, a post, something I see walking. Sometimes even a shop display gave me the key! :)

And well, sometimes the sentences are really so inspiring so I see the light.

Although it's being an amazing experience, I also need to finish and stop saying ten times every day "I have to design the poster". :) But is really an experience that every creative should try at least once!

Amazing idea Zuri! Do you work on the theme of each poster together, or Does Hasier write the text first and you design for it?

He actually writes the text first, and then I go with the design. Sometimes I already have a visual idea and try to fit the sentence to it, specially when the sentence is really "poetic" and "abstract". I do the design day by day, but he has some sentences in advance, so I can choose them.

    In 2013 I took a photo everyday: http://azeemazeez.com/tag/365/

It was a lot of fun and I plan to do something similar in 2015. The project not only made me less reliable on my camera, and more focussed on framing etc, but it also forced me to travel/walk more and interact with other photographers.

How do you keep reminding yourself to take a new photo everyday?

Start off with an unhealthy addiction to Instagram.

Initially I used to set alarms around lunch time, around the time I'd be leaving the office and around dinner time. After about a month, I didn't need the alarms. I found myself planning for the next few days. Was not easy at all though, but easily one of the most rewarding things that I've ever done.

Not strictly design oriented and certainly a more long term project—I have committed to a 10,000 hour path of improving my skill as an illustrator (the person, not the Adobe one). Each day before bed, I would spend 15min~1hr sketching. It's been about 4 months since I started and I am making some decent progress.

Just started on anatomical study recently. Should take a while before I get to the next topic.

Nothing concrete to share, though, I have a pile of about 200+ sheets of papers filled with pencil lines.

Photo a day project is a great way to learn photography which comes in handy in the design industry. I did my 365 project last year. Never missed a day ;) We even built a site that helps you run your photo a day project.

I tried creating a prototype every day last month: http://makeshowlearn.com/protovember-recap/

On a lot of days, I didn't have time to finish what I had in mind. For 2015, I'd like to do a weekly design sprint.

That kind of daily project must be exhausting. Maybe you should turn it to a weekly update. That will leave you more time to think between updates.

I've only started this about 4 months ago, and it's not exactly Design related, but it's becoming a really addicting and healthy daily project: writing two sentences about how I feel/what's going on on my day.

Doesn't matter if it's still early in the morning or late at night, but I find myself now craving the need to write a couple of sentences about my surroundings.

Next year I might just try this combined with a doodle/sketch :)

That would be fun reading those little sentences on the next year.

I've tried once to log my day using the app DayOne, I've started to forgot somedays then just leave the thing aside. Props to you for keep going!

I definitely recommend doing something small... whatever you pick!

Tough needle to thread. It has to be something substantive enough to be worth your time, but small enough that it doesn't become a huge burden to your daily routine.

Daily designs for a small icon or an Instagram challenge... or illustrating a short piece of type.

I haven't done a daily project yet, but wanted to do an illustration every week or month. Haven't decided quite yet. :-)

A fun one would be doing self-portraits in a different style every day. I did this during a semester of college.

My good friend did a poster a day back in 2012, taking the date in numbers, and working with only those shapes. Quite a few of them turned out pretty good.

He also would be worried all the time how he had a backlog of posters to do :D

This is great vitor! I was planning the same and it seems that it isn't necessarily the project but keeping up with it.
