I used curl -L "http://news.layervault.com/users/[0001-9999]/portrait" -o "#1.png", and gave up somewhere around 3K. Then I deleted all the ones that were 404s, all the all-white and all-black ones, and what you see is what was left.
I've been quietly fascinated by the variety among the DN avatars, so I downloaded as many as I could and put them all in one place. :-)

Love your avatar. The only thing that I know that it symbolizes is Black Flag--is this what you meant it to be, or does it also mean something else?

Pretty cool feature. Sad the image link is broken now. It's great to see a new style of avatar that forces you to create, and being pixel-based is brilliant. Yay FatBits™.

Haha! I like whoever made a sad-face avatar. I'd like to think it was made in response to all the probable smiley face avatars (like mine)... and not actually because the avatar creator was sad. Hmm.
