ASK DN: Motivational Movies To Design/Code By?

almost 9 years ago from , Digital Technology Director, NRDC

Was talking with some other web dev friends and realized we all seem to have those couple of movies in our rotation that we put on in the background while working on projects we really care about.

    Good question. Here are mine:

    • The Social Network: A movie about someone making an app. Perfect.
    • Iron Man: Another great "making things" movie.
    • Jiro Dreams of Sushi: Phenomenal cinematography mixed with a story about passion.
    • Batman Begins: Do we really need an excuse to watch Batman, beginning?

    I'll go first. Mine are:

    • Office Space: it came out when I was in college and it really made me realize early on that I didn't want to get stuck in cubicle life wasting away my 30's. So far, that's worked.
    • Limitless: I was diagnosed with Adult ADD right after college and started taking Strattera. That's when my whole life turned around for me.
    • 24 Hour Party People: the auto-biographical and very grand-dios story of the epic Tony Wilson. If you don't know, he's the bloke that discovered The Sex Pistols, Joy Division, Happy Mondays, New Order, and a bunch of others.
    • Drive: has a killer soundtrack and plenty of good cinematography in the background to be almost mind numbing. Plus, Ryan Gossling has an epic jacket in it every car lover wants.
    • Tron Legacy: I know, I know. Hardcore Tron fans hated it, but I actually prefer it over the first one. Soundtrack is great and it's full of enough action with a digital spin that it really gets me fired up whenever I need to do a long coding stint.
    • Hackers: a boy can dream. We all want to be command line samurai.
