I haven't downloaded them, but is there a reason the Ai files are so large? Do they include image assets as well?

I’ll gladly be at the front of the queue to criticise Photoshop and Illustrator’s document sizes, but if you take a look at the files, they’re not at all the same. The AI and PS files include lots of bitmap images.

If you delete the bitmaps out of the Illustrator document, the result is a 2.1 MB file (not PDF compatible, compression on).

I assume doing something similar wouldn't help the Photoshop document much (I didn't try it — far harder to do).

I really love the Material Design stuff that's coming out.

What is so special about it? It all looks pretty generic to me. Solid design, but it doesn't seem like anything special.

Creating an entire new visual language for Google seems pretty special to me.

"Material is the metaphor" is a good motto, but I feel like most strong UI's follow that anyway. I don't know...I don't want to be a downer...it's good that they put it together, but their design has been really strong for the past 3+ years, and the new stuff they are presenting isn't anything game changing or anything.

It's not much different from any of the other corporate style guides released in the past few years. They just have a little more emphasis on interaction design.

You have to understand the size of the company, how many teams inside Google nows follow the same direction and how this impacts the design culture inside and outside the company. Theses guidelines are cross platforms, screens and not only includes visual design direction but also motion, interaction and dimensionality.

They are one of the few companies that are also beginning to really explore, understand and document interaction standards. Their paper metaphor and documentation of interaction design are really awesome.

The thing that struck me the most about this wasn't the file sizes: was the fact that Google went ahead and published SKETCH <- source files!! That's an awesome thing for the indie developer community, especially the guys at Bohemian Coding. They're being put neck & shoulder with the "big boys" and Google just validated their worth.

    So AWESOME! =D

Was just thinking last week that I should just make a kit for material.
