Quickly import an SVG into Photoshop with Sketch

over 8 years ago from , Product Designer

Let's say you work with Photoshop and need to use a shape you only have in SVG.

  • Open the .svg file with Sketch
  • Select the shape
  • Copy
  • Then paste in Photoshop

That's it, you now have a new Vector Smart Object layer.

Thought it was cool and actually very convenient. Sorry if you already knew about it or if it sounds stupid, maybe it will help someone.

    Or you can use Illustrator.

    • Open the .svg in Illustrator
    • Select & copy the shape
    • ⌘-V in Photoshop

    then

    Smart Paste in Photoshop

The major advantage to using Illustrator for this is that you can paste the shape as an actual shape rather than a Vector Smart Object.

A bit of news on this old topic. I've made a little Photoshop extension that imports SVGs as vector layers, so now you don't have to involve Illustrator or Sketch. It also means you can import full SVGs consisting of multiple shapes and colors, and edit it directly in Photoshop.

You can do the same with Illustrator. And you can choose whether you want to import it as a shape, a vector smart object, etc.

I just wish that Photoshop would parse the damn SVG by itself ;)

I just randomly discovered this a couple days ago. I didn't expect much but it ended up working beautifully.

I prefer Photoshop's web exporting although I imagine I should be using actual SVGs more often.
