How will the new iPhone 6+ affect your Design process in Sketch?

9 years ago from , Founder at Information Lovers

I'm currently working on the redesign of our app and I'm asking myself: in which resolution should I design the app, because I would really like to still use Sketch mirror but also want to make use of the scaling features of Sketch...

Design for @6x… The iPhone 9 will have it and you’ll be ahead of the curve.

I would definitely design at @1x. Points at 1x are what is measured for UI layout. You can then easily export @2x or @3x as needed from Sketch.

When working on layout its probably best to work with the most constrained screen size and work up from there later. Just like mobile first responsive design for web – design for the most compact experience first.

I thought about designing at @1x for the same reasons. But when I am designing an App I use Sketch Mirror the hole time, because I have to get a feeling for the app on my device and because the interface looks totally different. So now I am thinking about designing the important parts of the app at @2x and after that I might propably design all the icons and stuff that I will have to export in @1x. But I'm not sure wether I will be happy with that approach, which is why I'm interested how all of you will deal with the new scaling factor.

Well, sketch mirror will scale your image to fit on the phone. You can definitely preview an iPhone6+ screen on your 5s, although everything will just be physically smaller, so it wouldn't be a perfect representation (font sizes etc probably need to be proportionally smaller on the larger screen)

The iPhone6 is still 2x, so if you want the simplest approach, that will be to design for 2x.

If a very well-designed app is your goal, you're going to want to handle these resolutions discretely. You can't just scale a 5.5" layout to 4" even with the difference in resolution. You'll end up with fonts that are either huge or small, depending on which way you're scaling.

The other thing to keep in mind is the difference between the 5 and the 6. They're the same pixel density, so just scaling up will make things look larger on the 6. If you want things to look the same size, you'll have to adjust spacing, not scaling.

our approach for todays design is to use shape or vector. so it won't be any problem in 1x or 2x.

2x for ios 1x for android, that's how I've been doing this for some time.
