So iOS Calendar isn't doing it for me anymore.
I need the calendar app you use, and why.
Go. (Thanks)

Sunrise – amazing people / amazing product: http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/23/5930129/the-best-calendar-app-for-iphone-video
I have used a lot of calendar apps, and Sunrise is the best by far till now. Especially now they have a web version and a Mac app.
Love love love it: www.sunrise.am
I absolutely love Sunrise. +1
Sunrise FTW. I've done extensive testing with Sunrise and Fantastical. I'm sure it comes down to preferences, because both are very well done, but I vote Sunrise, hands down. Clean, constrained, less chaotic, and the dev/support team is phenomenal.
+1,
why: it's clean, full featured, but feels simple. Also a plus to have it on my mac.
I've started giving Sunrise a try, it does have some nice experience stuff (loving that today arrow). Thanks!
Fantastical. Absolutely love it.
Another vote for Fantastical!
+1 for fantastical. I love their mac nav bar plugin
So I've used Fantastical, Sunrise, and Tempo. All are nice apps with particular strengths, but I've ended up back with iOS Calendar. Maybe you can elaborate on why the stock app "isn't doing it"?
(In my case, I'm not a power user with tons of meetings and such, so the apps' extra features didn't justify taking up memory on my 16 GB 4S. Plus I like being able to check the date in the icon, and dates as badges are a horrible hack.)
I also have gone back to the iOS Calendar. My friends tease me about it (they use Sunrise), but it barely seemed different to me.
I guess I'm not a "power user" either.
There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but it doesn't make my calendar experience particularly delightful (or whatever) and I thought I could probably do better.
I've recently moved to a company which uses a company calendar more than I'm used to, so figured I'd shop around.
My preference is Fantastical. Its natural language processing allowed me to start using calendars properly without feeling like I was wrestling with little widgets. Having events as a timeline was my basic requirement but Fantastical has a neat way of flipping between views. I found the iOS Calendar too anchored to the month grid.
I use Sunrise on Android and it's a great alternative.
Magneto. Best calendar service out there, has a ton of smart features like the built in todo service and the super slick availability checker.
I used iCal, Sunrise, Tempo, Fantastical and Refresh. Ended up with Tempo. I still use Fantastical on Mac though.
