I've just finished putting together my CV and am needing to spread the good word —does anyone feel like hiring a Visual Designer? I'm hungry to join a team, work damn hard and to create amazing things.

83 HTTP requests at 25,579k. The fuck?!
I've never seen a site come close to having such a high ratio of visuals:performance.
Everything looks great, the type and colors are awesome. But man you've gotta do something about performance; you've got 65 massive images. Also, use gzip to compress your assets. You could use Amazon's CloudFront CDN too.

I've made some tweaks to hopefully ease the painful performance (but I admit, it sill needs work!) —took your advice on enabling Gzip to compress my assets too.

No prob mate. I see you've cut the page weight in half so it's a start, but it's still the biggest site I've seen in years.
Currently there's 83 HTTP requests at 12mb. I'd aim for 10 requests at 2mb. Even that would be pretty large for such a simple site.
Some of the images are still massive. Anything over 250kb is questionable. Check out ImageAlpha and ImageOptim.
Really though, you should try to avoid loading so many images. Try just loading the first 5, then lazy loading the rest. Or try combining them into sprites to reduce HTTP requests. Or try loading them as the user scrolls. Or try loading the relevant images when the user clicks something. Or think about splitting your portfolio up into different pages. There's a million things you could try, but loading 65 hi-res images upfront is performance suicide.
Also, concatenate your 8 Javascript files into 1, so there's just 1 HTTP request. Do the same with your CSS files.
Also, the two arrow images you have, combine them into a sprite to save a request.
You'll get there eventually, best of luck!
This comment here is what makes designer news awesome :) Plus this is something (part of the whole) I would give to a client after a ux review ... so this is high quality feedback for free (1-3hours billing otherwise )

Dude, this is beautiful.
Love the animated emoticon moving through the entire thing with you and the whimsical copy. Great typography in general, though I would change the color of the headings ("love projects") to differentiate them from the time ("X to present").
I'd add some kind of divider between projects, currently it requires a little bit of thinking to understand which project your "about the project" sections refer to.
The print stylesheet could use some tweaking. Currently I'm gettin 100% width and the measure is too long.

As Kevin mentions, I just got a sad face on mobile, and had no idea what I was missing, so I'd love some sort of message as to why it won't work/how to fix it. It was also making the DN iPhone app crash when I opened it.

Dude! Awesome. Love it. My only major gripe would be that the image which appears when you hover over your name is a bit unwelcoming. I get the desire to appear maybe, offbeat? But if that was all that I saw, I might be slightly turned off (not anything to do with your looks; mainly a comment on how you're presenting yourself in the photo). It also doesn't really match the rest of the "smiley" theme you have going.
Pete — The image is now me sitting on table mountain and eating a celebratory apple which I think is a lot better than an offbeat mug shot :D haha.

Just a heads up, your site is practically unusable in Safari(7.0.5).
Loved the layout with your info and the colors. I wasn't expecting to see your work like a list and with a tiny scrollbar, though.

Great stuff. Definitely look into minifying and compressing as others have mentioned (WAY too many HTTP requests) and throwing assets onto a CDN.
As far as loading images goes, maybe you can lazyload them as the user scrolls down the page? Chances are there are a number of people who won't make it all the way down your portfolio pieces.
Lazy load made a big difference :D!
Good luck and great portfolio! My only recommendation is to have the yellow splash page dismiss faster or add a dismiss button. I was halfway down the page before it went away xD.

Checked it out on mobile and all I get is a frowny face w/ some arrows... That's a major letdown...
Seems it's phenomenal on desktop but, I'm not even sure what's going on for mobile. Should definitely give that some thought if that's somewhere you're actively driving traffic. Could just be simplified contact info + "better viewed on a large, shiny monitor"
Edit: (the page is still behind the color div so I can still scroll the page on mobile, über tease!)

Great work. Maybe I'm lame, but I'd lose the trailing background smily face. You have a lot of great work to show and that distracted my attention away from it.
Nah, I'd keep it. It sets this portfolio apart from 99% of the other online ports, in a way that is rather charming.
