What's happening to DN?

9 years ago from , Product Design Manager at Facebook

I think now is a good time to have that talk. I love DN, I check it multiple times a day. I love it because it's an amazing source of news surrounding our industry, it's one of the richest sources of interesting content and is often the ammo for a lot of the things I tweet about.

More and more the front page is being filled with these 'share your ... profile' posts which become giant threads of links to people's profiles on which ever network, personally I don't think this is news and it dilutes the excellent content that's normally filling the front page.

If everyone loves these posts so much, I wish they'd appear somewhere else, it would be silly to have a section for them, so maybe we could just burn them with fire?

They've all been slapped off the front page.

The only reason people continue to make these threads is to coin more followers themselves. Don't believe for a second they're actually interested in other peoples social media profiles.

Social media profiles, yes, 100% agreed.

However, I did wind up checking out all the blogs of the designers on that thread earlier this morning and found some good info and and some good blog designs. Some not so good ones too, but that thread is not bad.

I can't agree fully with this. I, for one, have had amazing interactions with people I've met from this site. I used to feel pretty alone as a designer in a developer-centric environment. Not so much anymore!

Yeah yeah yeah, lately I've been more proactive and attend lots of local designer focused events/meetups

We're in a sharing mood right now. It's like kindergarten again.

Yep, I can't think of a better explanation.

Personally, I don't think it happens as often as people have made it out to be (joke stories aside). I find people get exhausted from those types of posts and they won't tend to resurface for a while.

As an aside, I do appreciate the DN twitter lists that were constructed from some of those threads.

I've seen the idea of a downvote button get panned before ("just don't upvote stories you don't want") but it might be time to get one in here. I upvote stories I like and skip those I don't but I feel like "ignoring" isn't enough. If a downvote button means less follower-hungry posts on the front page then I'm all for it.

Isn't there a Designer News group on Slack? I've stopped paying attention to that for this very reason. Still, there are some gems here and there, mostly noise though.

I agree with you but I don't think that it's such a big deal. If people want to share profile links or do self promotion they should be able to do that. Share profile link trends are always temporary. Keep calm and share interesting content :)
