Does anyone have any tips on making SVG animated icons?

I've looked in to things like Snap.svg but it seems like overkill, I can do a bit of JS but it's not something I want to get in to too heavily. I've seen a few tuts that use CSS animation (definitely better for me) but just wanted to gauge peoples experiences and pros/cons of either method.
