I had had some JavaScript expierence before I started reading it, but I've found the good ol' JavaScript: The Good Parts book to be excellent for learning what I didn't already know (which, admittedly, is quite a lot). Also, http://www.codecademy.com/ is a great tool for learning online--best of all, it's free.

I'm not surprised that Codecademy didn't work for you - its very difficult to teach high level concepts with only a few paragraphs of text and while only focusing on mechanics.

Treehouse is one of the best online resources for beginners. (caveat emptor - I used to work there)

I think Code School is also good for slightly more advanced material.

Shay Howe has a great guide on jQuery (http://learn.shayhowe.com/advanced-html-css/jquery) which is detailed but light. I think its a gentler introduction to the power of Javascript through the simpler syntax of jQuery. (caveat emptor - I know him)

There's always the old Javascript: The Good Parts if you're looking for an actual book. :)

Same as Jon, I would also Eloquent JavaScript (http://eloquentjavascript.net), which not only teaches programming, but programming thinking.

Have a look at Learning Javascript by Tim Wright. His approach walks you through what you need to know as you are starting out. Tim has a been a great mentor to me and his understanding of the language is deep. I think 'JavaScript: The Good Parts' is a brilliant book for learning JavaScript From the ground up. It's written by Douglas Crockford, the guy who popularized JSON, and the way he tries to get you to understand JS in his book is beautifully simple.
