Hey all,
I recently launched http://www.tumblrboilerplate.com and invite you to check it out.
The tumblr boilerplate is a starting point for any designer/developer interested in creating custom tumblr themes on their own. I based this boilerplate off the HTML5 boilerplate and my own spices when working on tumblr themes.

Oh sweet! I've wanted to make themes for awhile but was always deterred from their syntax.
Is there syntax highlighting available for Tumblr's custom layout language, in say… Sublime Text?
I, too, would like to know this.
Not that I know of but I'm sure it's in the works by someone. At least I hope!

If you are familiar with HTML5 Boilerplate and enjoy their way of doing things, I created an adaptation of it for tumblr a couple years ago and have been keeping it up to date as HTML5BP has been updated.

Nice! I tried to get them to release an official one when I worked there, but we decided to just release our own default themes instead that people could modify or read the code and learn from.
Also that font you're using looks so close to Bookman Old Style I had to do a double take.
Awesome. Thanks for the info and background. I sought out to create a boilerplate since there are so many on GitHub but none were of "Official" quality. With enough community feedback and response we can make the perfect tumblr starting theme similar to how the HTML5 Boilerplate turned out.
I used Bitter :) and I agree it looks very similar.
Is there a sandbox where you can test tumblr themes while you are developing them? Or do I just make a fake tumblr with one post in each post type?
I typically setup a secondary blog under my primary blog (password protected if you like) and make every type of post. I may add some data for anyone to add to the theme but there's no real import (xml) feature like you see on WordPress or something similar.
So to answer your question. No at this time there isn't a sandbox. It sounds like sweet idea though.

I have been staying away from getting into tumblr themes due to the lack of time, this should help with mockups for some personal themes without getting bogged down by syntax and tumblr quirks.
