A group chat for designers

9 years ago from

Hey guys.

As a designer, I constantly want to meet new fellows designers to share thoughts, advices and get feedbacks.

What about making a Slack group chat only for designers where we share what we are doing and give advices etc...?

Does it sound a good idea?

I'm working on a site that's similar to IRC but uses Twitter for authentication. I've been meaning to post it here but haven't gotten around to it.

Wouldn't it be simpler to make an IRC channel for DN?

    Check this out!

How does it work if you are already using slack? Is it another room?

You can be a member of multiple Slack teams. The cool thing is Slack provides a convenient Switch Team option in the main menu!

my vote is for IRC. Why fix something when it's not broken? Also anyone can join.

I know this isn't the same but I thought I'd share anyway.

Myself and a few designers share a skype chat. It started with 3 of us, but now there is 9. We've been on everyday for nearly two years.

It's a pretty amazing place to ask questions and share resources. Nearly all of us have worked together/crossed paths at some point.

Now I work for myself so it really helps to fill in the gap between freelance and studio life. I'd highly recommended something like this for when you need feedback or an honest a opinion.

At first it was a way to get designers together for a beer but it has grown into something completely different, we have shared dropbox folders and a google group for development articles to help designers keep up to speed. We're all now in different studios and spread across 3 countries but we still log-on everyday.

To be honest it's like a support group for designers :)

The author is really obsessed with his chat website. Nothing will make change of mind, it's pointless to argue with anything else.

Why don't we just setup an old #IRC channel. Jesus, ain't more practical than that. No need to fancy chat at all. You can still use nice IRC chats clients.

Hacker News has their own chat channel on IRC and nobody died.

I'm all for this! But, the main problem is we have to wait for Gianluca's approval before we can partake in the chat goodness...

I believe you can whitelist domains people can sign up from in the Administration --> Settings --> Signup Mode.

    @gmail @hotmail @aol

Edit: You may only be able to get there via the webapp.

It seems everyone need it, but a really great (old style forum-chat) community doesn't exist.

What's the evidence that confirms your claim. I see plenty of examples of great communities that have IRC channels that were made, even before the iMac was released.

IRC is another way of communication. What I suspect you want is to port the entire DN to a place where you have it all. I personally dislike this. I want to come to this website to comment and get links. I would want to chat with other members choosing the best tool for my needs and that's all.

IRC? Let's do this with a private Google+ Community. Here you go: https://plus.google.com/communities/115240138565619334960 (feel free to send requests if you are registered at DN)

I've always wondered about this. It would be nice to be able to chat with some of you all and kick things around.

There's used to be a site for this sort of thing some time back but the name escapes me.
