Hey guys, I was recently looking at a lot of my old files and I came across my first designs. I was 13 when I started and here it is, a design that was aimed for a local hardcore band using nothing but LOTS of photoshop brushes, layer opacities and those amazing text effects! Feel free to share yours!
Ahhhhhhh 1999 :)
Tables. Tables everywhere.
Tables in tables in tables! That's just what you got when you built your websites with Microsoft Frontpage 2000, man.
I love it. Man... Tables were a lot of fun, and very useful
Reminds me of Neopets guild websites from 2001. Here's my very first site which was for a Neopets guild, complete with a browser I designed. (Shield your eyes...)
Oh boy. I started doing graphics in 1995 - mostly 3d with 3d Studio Max. I can't find my earliest work, but here are two fun projects:
In 2003 I created this animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SiTXSViXV4&feature=youtu.be
The voice-over at the end says "Only the best oranges makes it all the way."
In 2005 I did this webdesign and won a blue iPod mini:
EDIT: After posting this I started digging in the Waybackmachine and found a whole bunch of early work (2001-2005): https://www.flickr.com/photos/123817035@N07/
I remember when snowflakes were all the rage on the web. Those are some damn good snowflakes.
Right? Such a particular trend. Here was my take in 2002:
LMAO, that animation was awesome!
oh man! i waited till i got home to watch the animation and im glad i did, was awesome and totally not expected, well done.
About 1988, designed on a Commodore 64. I think I was in 4th grade. https://www.flickr.com/photos/iansoper/6977923221/
thats pretty rad! (:
I remember sitting in front of the commodore with a joystick (maybe a mouse), drawing each pixel. :)
I love that!
This was my first design project using Photoshop. I was really into Harry Potter at the time (still am). Anyways, it was fun to put my ugly face on his :)
(oops. replied to wrong comment)
My love for Wawa runs deep.
I joined an internet forum to talk about NBA rumors. I thought of these little image signatures as a way make my posts look distinct from other users.
Haha mine was also a banner for a forum... but I don't know if I will be able to find it again...
that grungy script is perfect.
reminds me of a old cracked jersey!
Oldest thing I found, web for my QW clan from 2000.
Awesome. I did tons of those for Unreal Tournament (clanbase) and Utopia ;)
Those kind of logos really helped you understand Photoshop ... filters :]
Before I discovered interaction design, I'd hoped to be an industrial designer/architect.
Great work, I love the details.
Not exactly the first, but it's as far back as I could go — it's a fansite I used to run back in the early 2000s. Man, was I proud of that custom scrollbar...
that is a pretty suave scrollbar tho ;)
+1 for custom scroll bars.
I'd love to but my crazy Ex Girlfriend decided she would be crazy and threw my old 2 TB harddrive with the first 2 years worth of work on it to the ground...
I deleted IE from her computer because I care...
Lesson learn? IE Ruins relationships, Kill IE.
haha oh man, sorry to hear that, did she not know that she could just re-install it? :(
Found on my old deviantart account I did not update for 5+ years Potato quality
I'm not even mad
Man my first design is so old it no longer even exists on the internet...it was for a N64 cheat codes website, and it involved a repeating background of Mario from Super Mario 64
Do you remember the url? You might be able to find it with the Wayback Machine
I've tried so many times! it was at members.aol.com/acelement21 and I can't seem to find it, but trust me it was awful haha
How are you guys able to go back that far? Haha
This was the earliest I could find, from 2007 but before that it was all the same but with video game Art like Metal Gear Solid.
i'm a hoarder of designs and pictures :O
i actually dig this, has that camo MGS feel
I wish I hoarded more. I'm like the opposite of a hoarder, I always want to throw things away when they are not needed haha.
Thanks, I was super inspired by the Metal Gear Solid Game (#1) thats my first memory of playing with Photoshop and using it to "collage"
This was fun, im gunna try digging more.
Oh man, just found the first thing I ever posted to deviantArt. It's a terrible folder icon. --
I also came across this Photoshop brush-heavy nametag design I did for a tech center class --
I've been dabbling with HTML back to the days of AOL profiles and Geocities/Angelfire/Homestead websites but unfortunately I don't have anything to show for back then; however, one of the earlier pieces of work is my website from 2006-2007.
A live, working version at http://labs.jonsuh.com/lip/
2003: A Winamp 2.x skin I created in MSPaint http://customize.org/winamp2/skins/30436
2002: When desktop customization was a thing Full view: http://files.customize.org/thumbnails/larger/37945.jpg
I still customize my desktop. I have geektools on my work mac, but it was a pain in the ass to re position everything every time I had to unplug my rMBP from my two monitors every time I have to go to a meeting.
get these on dribbble!
I was also 13 when I made my first design/website. I had just built my own computer and wanted to make a site to show others how to do the same. The copy is pretty hilarious. I also remember using Photoshop's slice to HTML tool which makes me cringe just thinking about it.
right on man, this is great!
Uff, Impossible. My first design must be in an old CD buried in my parents home. It was made in 92, In Corel DRAW! 0.91, yes the old Corel Draw.
The most old design I can recall are these:
Haha my first digital designs are LONG gone - one was an MS Paint drawing of Bishop that I did pixel by pixel to make it perfect (it was not perfect, but pretty good all things considered) and a Star Wars fanpage that I made in Word/Notepad and hosted on Geocities. Yes, it had the Cantina Band MIDI file playing in the background.
(Both of these were around 19-20 years ago now... sigh.)
what a lot of my other work looked like too!
First time using photoshop for colouring my hand drawn illustration.
Some of you have done a really impressive job of hanging onto old files.
I wish! Wayback Machine comes to the rescue for a lot of it though.
Unfortunately most of my work from 2005-2008 is completely lost thanks to domain squatters with strict robots.txt files.
Yeah, this was the earliest attempt I could find:
From my DeviantArt account.
8+ years ago: Use to be a big deal in the THPS community, so I decided to redesign our "site". This was my first attempt at web design, done mostly in MS Paint. Header was Photoshop. Might've actually been the first time I dabbled in PS. Weird.
Thank goodness for Photobucket.
Circa 2007. Got third place in a statewide 2nd Amendment poster contest. Woooo
I still need to dig for my old web designs (they were mostly on Geocities and Tripod), but I cut my teeth in Photoshop making fan wallpapers for King of Fighters,
and image blends of movie stars.
Pretty sure these were all done my last year in college before graduating. I had a ton of free time.
Started in 1998, here is an unfinished flash game from 2001. We look back on this and think it was ahead of it's time! Too bad we never got to finish it...
The NAN% was an embedded audioplayer.
This is humiliating.
(Made with tables. Some of the background images aren't loading on account of using the Wayback machine to see it. I think I was 16? Maybe 15? Was grunge ever in? Was posting teenage politics?)
Oh, grunge was huge alright! Webdesign was about 80% choosing the right set of grungy brushes...
the oldest file i can find on my computers is my first graffiti back in high school
Surely it was some forum signature ha ha, with a TON of layer effects.
I'm not a proper visual designer - my background is UX and game design. I'm teaching myself some visual design to broaden my skill set a little.
Here's my first (incomplete) attempt at doing a bog standard marketing page:
Awww yea. When I look back it amazes me that I actually thought this design was actually good. https://www.flickr.com/photos/petuhjeon/8350202873/in/set-72157632442073885
We should have a share your deviant art account from 2005 treat.
I don't have my first design anymore, but I have this web banner, one of the earliest designs I made for a paying client. Ugh!
One of my first web designs from back in 2005. I was 12 at the time.
Web site for an old graffiti and underground art zine
Sad... I just deleted my DeviantArt portfolio a week ago. Don't think I have them anymore.
Still run the first version of my website: http://jenius.me/v1/
I was pretty stoked about this at the time, I remember. Cufon for fonts, wow such innovation.
Heh. Don't have my first design work to hand. My poor attempts at sketching are somewhere in 1980s landfill ;-)
I don't even have my first web site - the version that's in the wayback machine is a two or three years after the first one (which didn't have any images in it... because the img tag hadn't been invented yet) - nice to see I was a standardista even back then
I do have the HTML to the very first commercial web work I worked on back in 1996... I think it rendered slightly better in the browsers of the day than in current Chrome ;-)
Ugh, too bad I don't have my old stuff anymore.
Haha I was 15 and got a demo Photoshop 6 I think ... which wouldnt let me save so I took a screenshot :P
The first piece of software I ever shipped was a cribbage program written in MatLab.
It's still available to download: http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/14806-cribbage-suite
This is probably one of the first pieces digital art I ever posted online as a part of the infamous(?) BlueSfear Worm. I believe this was around 2005 or 2006.
I was able to find a website I did from 2002. It was a blog, I was a sophmore in High School I think? Maybe a junior. I don't know.
Read about me complain about my parents on my greymatter blog. ;)
This was my first attempt making an icon in Photoshop. Remember when design wasn't all flat? http://d.pr/i/tRPs
My first site, circa 1995. The URL was fourtwenty.net. #eternalstoner
First portfolio/personal site.. Complete with tables, image rollover, marquee bar, and freshman dorm room address. Ahh 2009.. wait 2009??
My first website circa 1999
oh hell yes, I've still got a flash site up from 2004. Complete with looping music. Such hype.
My first attempts at graphic design started with doing "graphic design battles" on random forums.
The theme of this one was "angels."
Gawd so embarassing.
Not my first ones, but still a few designs are lying around at http://haihappen.priv.at.
Here's my first freelance gig that's still operational from about 10 years ago. They actually haven't changed too, too much since then:
