The stripe checkout process was amazing. Literally one click :O
Stripe checkout was beautiful. Then, I realized that it wasn't doing the emailing and the cc charge unless you do it via a server. It wasn't like Paypal. After a bit of scrambling, I managed to work around using Parse and MailGun. It's interesting to figure out these things.
Looks great. Beautiful site and compelling copy. You've got this.
My only comment would be: You should make the first video on your homepage less amazing. I found myself watching that for about 5 minutes, completely unaware of why I visited the site in the first place.
There's more where that came from. I was just playing around with Screenflow thanks to Nathan's suggestion. I will start explaining each part of the flow.
It's good to hear that the copy is compelling. I always struggle with that. Thanks!
Awesome! Looking forward to this.
Thanks, can't wait to get in depth with some of those topics!
What kind of hard-skills do you recommend people have a handle on to get the most out of this?
Funny story: my sister who has no background in tech whatsoever looked at my site and told me she feels compelled to learn all that stuff.
The idea that I feel passionate about is that anyone can design and I'm here to write in such a way that it wouldn't look scary at all to learn. So to answer your question, you don't need any hard skill. Just raw curiosity and a real thirst for learning.
Love that, man.
Cue the pile of api request emails DN mods are about to get :)
Congrats Meng! More awesome than what you're selling is that you are actually doing it.
Also, I loved the landing page. Would love to see that clip quickly move from the sketch > xcode > iphone simulator , etc. Give viewers are quick view of what they'll be doing.
Again, congrats and I hope you sell a ton of these books :)
I think the DN API is already a hot topic with all the new DN apps based on it. :)
Thanks, I thought that it would allow me to be better informed about the book that I'm writing if I designed and coded the whole thing.
Great suggestion, thanks. I'll definitely polish more everything when it gets released! :)
Signed up. But no confirmation email?
Same here, it'd be great if we could get a confirmation on our orders.
I figured out late that the Email confirmation wasn't handled by Stripe so I'm scrambling to use a service like MailGun and Mailchimp. Sorry about that. Will be fixed today!
UPDATE: Fixed! Stripe actually has a setting that allows you to create automatic receipt / email confirmation. But it has to be enabled manually. :)
This might be a dumb question, but will much of the course involve anything exclusive to Sketch? I'm assuming everything will translate to Illustrator/PS but—having never used Sketch—I'm clueless.
I think you can translate pretty much everything to PS, except with different techniques. But the book does include on Sketch files. However, you might find the rest of the content worth the pre-order's price. :)
Looks awesome Meng, looking forward to it.
Thanks Nathan, Screenflow was a great suggestion. Can't wait to write more about Flinto!
A great book is also a way how to get visa :) Pre-ordered.
Hopefully, the people in power can also recognize self-started books. Or perhaps they need a well-known publisher?
Not really, it just has to be well know and one of the best in the industry. But it depends on how skilled lawyer you hire for the paperwork.
This looks great, can't wait to read. I've just left an agency to freelance and travel for a bit, so was interesting reading your blog too.
Thanks, it's been a long journey. I'm always amazed at how much has changed, yet so little.
Is this teaching iOS through storyboard or actual code?
Both. The Storyboard part is to fulfill a slightly different purpose: prototyping. But at least 50% of building the app is code. The rest is design, prototyping, analytics, libraries, app store, beta test, provisioning profiles, etc.
Awesome! Pre-ordered!
I'm really grateful! Thank you Tom. :)
You're welcome. I like your work a lot so... no brainer!
This is exciting. Congrats on getting the first part of this out the door.
I have a pre-order, but I'm a very experienced iOS developer. If a student/newbie emails me, ( Check my site for the address ) I'll forward my copy of the assets when they arrive. - This is now taken by Tharshan Muthulingam
Guys like you and James really inspire me. I really need to closely follow your work, meet up and exchange emails!
And thanks for the recommendations. This far exceeds my expectations.
Its mesmerising to see the sketch video playing, at the same time weird that the mouse is not moving. :D
Really excellent stuff. Thanks for making this dude. It is something I really like to learn more about.
Also, its inspiring to hear your story. I'm facing the same situation now in the UK with 6 weeks to go before my time and option to sort out my sponsorship which fell apart after company acquisition. Truly appreciate and deeply understand the frustration you went through. You still came out on top fighting ;)
The Visa haunted me all those years and still does as I'm traveling. It follows me everywhere. I guess that's the price to pay for skipping college.
But you can't give up. Every time a door closes, there are more that opens. Eventually, you face that door again with a big grin.
Thank you for your kind words.
how does it follow you? does it come up as a rejected visa everywhere you go?
Well, if you don't hold a degree, you cannot get a visa to work in most countries. It's not impossible, but 10x harder or less flexible. In Hong Kong, I couldn't stay for more than 6 months, or find a sponsor that is well recognized. In Japan, it would be even harder.
Where are you from? I thought you where chinese, why would it be hard to get a visa to hong Kong? excuse my ignorance.
I'm a Canadian in Germany right now, in on the 3 month visitor visa however my Fiancée is German so we're looking into how that all works out.
Congrats man! When reading your Medium stuff I always wished for something with more 'oomph', looking forward to the release date.
Writing is a lot of work. I actually had to hold on many projects to focus on this one. Even so, I still can't catch up to what I have in mind. Hopefully, technology and tools will enable us to fulfill our visions at the same pace as our thoughts.
Wow, really inspiring. I think I'll buy it :)
Awesome to hear. I'm really humbled by all the responses.
How can I brag that I pre-ordered the book when the "Tweet it" button is broken?
Haha, I totally forgot that after-purchase tweet button. That's what working in localhost does to you! Thanks Ben! :D
UPDATE: Fixed!
Yes! Just pre-ordered!
That's really amazing. I am the luckiest man to be able to write and take a little break from freelancing. Thank you! :)
Looking forward to this! Congratulations on such a great prospect!
Thanks Gareth, I really appreciate the comment! It's really shaping up to be my most successful project so far.
Meng, this looks like a really interesting read - but the sample page scrolls horrifically on my brand new iPad (which I expect to read the majority of the book on). I'll definitely preorder if you can guarantee the site will run well on my device.
Elliot, thanks for reporting this. My girlfriend was reporting the same issue and weirdly it didn't happen on my iPad mini. I'll fix for hers and I'll send you a message!
Thanks!
I tried to fix for the iPad by disabling the hover interactions, let me know if it still persists. Thanks!
Just read your story. It's very enlightening to hear the other side of the "American dream" that's still pretty much alive for people outside of the USA. I don't have a degree either, does that mean it's near impossible to get a visa? And did you get a visa when you started working in San Francisco?
Edit - just found this on an expat forum:
"Generally, if you have no degree, then you need 12 years of experience (3 yrs experience x 4 yrs school)"
The book is on my shopping list btw, looks fantastic! :)
Please note that I applied for the H1-B on the 12 years of experience that I had. But, those experiences have to be extremely well documented (with employment letters, recommendations, contacts, recognitions by well-reputed school teachers, etc) -- you have to be working the whole time. Freelance doesn't really count. I believe that's one of the many reasons I was declined.
If that's your case, then I really suggest starting to document all your letters, and have great relationships with your past employers. Also, just in case the H1-B doesn't work, I suggest that you get recognitions by being published in well-known magazines and speak at reputed conventions. Basically, you have to look great on paper, which is my biggest weakness.
Best of luck! I'm sure you can make it.
Couple of copy edit issues, uses when native english would have just used use.
otherwise, I wish I had the coin for it!
Thanks, it's a bit raw. English isn't my primary language, but I'm dedicating as much time as I can improving it. Please let me know of anything specific. I will fix them!
Just pre-ordered! Can't wait and congrats. Also I like your expression in the picture. You wanna kick ass
Every designer should have a love affair with their cameras, especially if it's a DSLR. It's such a great combination with design.
A million thanks for the support!
