Err. Just eye candy. The only reason I like my normal remote more than my iPhone is because of its physical buttons.
Why can't 'this remote' be an app on my phone?
I agree.
I currently use the Remote app to control my Apple TV. Mostly for the keyboard as searching Netflix can be terribly annoying without it. I'd say that's one main thing missing from me with this concept, a solution to the lack of keyboard.
Lovely concept, very well produced. But an additional touch screen device? I doubt we will see this as it removes the need for a software layer on the big screen and why bother if you have an iOS device? Cost would be prohibitive, as would the materials, The box is mostly out of site and I would not need it in aluminium. All it needs (other than an UX overhaul, app store and massive array of content partners) is a better app to control it from your iOS device, and a simple trackpad-like remote that actually works.
Really nice. But I don't really get why you would need a separate device as a remote, this could just as well just be an iPhone / iPod Touch app.
It could be for consumers who purchase Apple TV but doesn't have a smartphone. It also allows Apple to sell it to you at a higher price too. ;)
If someone doesn't own a smartphone by now, they aren't buying Apple TV any time soon. This is the one feature that absolutely sold me on Chromecast vs. Apple TV. Using your phone to control the TV is a no-brainer and a feature that will overtake future TV experience in less than 5 years (hopefully).
There is a Remote app on the app store...
It definitely looks great but I would want the addition of a couple Thunderbolt ports. That would allow the use of a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter as well as external storage if iCloud isn't your thing.
Why did they randomly get rid of optical audio out? That would make it a no-purchase for me.
The design is beautiful though. Really digging the remote.
Well optical only passes through a downmix of DTS-HD MA/DD+/Surround PCM anyway, so it "may" eventually be phased out altogether. With the eventual upgrade to 4K, we'll probably see some newer audio codecs, and optical just can't compete. Makes sense to let the TV units do the optical out conversions and the Apple unit have the fewest necessary outputs.
What a beautiful concept / renderings. I feel like this one has some real thought behind it. I agree with some others on the remote issue but, if it had an app as well as this remote - that would be ideal.
We have about 8-10 apple TV's in all of our conference rooms and if there weren't dedicated remotes, I could see connecting to the wi-fi / apple TV being pretty complicated.
These renders are pretty incredible. He added a lot of natural elements to them that made them more realistic; light smudges on the screens and a red glow emitting from the Netflix app. I looked at the rest of his mockups and they are all equally impressive. His iWatch concepts showed them in the Apple store displays which was a nice touch.
The charging on the Apple TV itself is weird. Cool concept, but it necessitates you getting up to grab it off the TV stand instead of keeping it routinely closer to the couch (i.e. the point of remote controls :P).
I want to to be real because of the lanyard/lanyard-clip. That's perfect.
The eye candy on this feels a bit superfluous. Nice effort though.
That would be way more expensive than $99.
Absolutely beautiful!
Nixing the ethernet for a slightly lower profile is a no-go for me personally. It's not like I carry the thing in my jeans.
I have an Apple TV and it's a bit crap experience. It's prety closed and I cannot profit it well in Europe. I want Apple to make something more disruptive.
Beautiful, So Beautiful.
These are great! I normally ignore these kinds of mockups because they usually look like crap or go in some crazy direction. I doubt the new Apple TV will look anything like this, but it does feel like it could be an Apple product.
I think it's beautiful - did you actually create real mockups? They seem too well rendered for some photoshop!
Anyway, great idea and very well presented.
From the designer's portfolio, he looks like someone who specialised in 3D. Either way its impressive if its all 3D renders, or if they manage to build an actual prototype.
All that tech, and the remote still uses IR? I guess it could be for controlling other boxes.
