I can't ditch ST just like that. I'm in love.
We'll see...
This is extremely exciting. GitHub has been pioneering the open source community—and by extension, the entire programming community—for a long time, and I completely and utterly trust them to make the right choices on their own; but even better than that, they’re open-sourcing the vast majority of Atom’s infrastructure.
The fact they’re going to charge for it is the icing on the cake. Open source should not mean free – far from it, in my opinion. Maintaining an open source project is no simple undertaking. It’s a full time profession, and often an expensive one. Whether they incorporate Atom’s pricing into GitHub’s own subscriptions, or allow standalone purchase, the project is well worth backing financially and otherwise.
I am really excited about this.
Not just as a standalone product and not even as something that will integrate well with Github.
but rather as a new class of IDE's that are location/hardware agnostic.
Brackets and Atom (and a few others that are gaining steam) are going to be big and I'm stoked to watch this space evolve
Have you checked out light table? It has a very new flow of working that's actually pretty clean. While it does have a learning curve, it's a fairly fresh take on development.
Hear hear.
I'm a Brackets man by choice, but I especially like that command palette in Atom. Would like to see that springing up in more places.
I quite liked the premise of brackets but still find myself using ST3. Looking forward to trying out Atom.
FYI if you want to share but are out of invites, you can just send the downloaded zip to someone.
Two secs bro, just got to write some code for my editor so that I can write some code with my editor.
I know it's a lot more than that but that's just been stuck in my mind all morning. My favourite part of the whole over hyped mess so far is people offering Vim invites.
Either way, I have 2 more invites available if anyone is after one just drop your email in a reply
Sent
Thanks!
Strange, but I haven't received anything yet :)
Check your junk maybe? I had mine sent to my @me and it ended up flagged

If anyone gets more invites soon, I would love to have one!
Edit: Oops, didn't notice that you've already been invited!
Would love one too !
There's lots of things that editors like these could potentially do. Haven't checked Brakets just yet, but I know for sure that I'd love me some CoffeScript debugging and direct Sass editing in the inspector.
Anyone have an invite?!
email?
On its way
THANK YOU SO MUCH _ LOOKS AMESOME!
Interesting that they're not open sourcing it.
(Not saying it's bad that they're not - but I find it interesting. It says something about where they think their business is going I think.)
"Atom won't be closed source, but it won't be open source either. It will be somewhere inbetween, making it easy for us to charge for Atom while still making the source available under a restrictive license so you can see how everything works. We haven't finalized exactly how this will work yet. We will have full details ready for the official launch."
It's all about the money, money, money ...
The editor itself looks a whole lot like Sublime. I really dig the style they went for on the landing page, though.
I've heard (and read) that comparison a lot already, and have to agree!
I only recently dropped Dreamweaver for Sublime. (Hey, leave me alone, I'm a designer! I only use it for it's live preview, okay! No "insert table" buttons for me!)
But to be honest, I like that GitHub is behind this. Hoping for a Beta invite :]
Congrats on the switch! How has the setup been going?
Yeah great. Coincides with learning Git, learning how to set up a server, node.js, etc.
The experience gets slightly lost in all the other new experiences, but I'm enjoying the heck out of it regardless.
I have never been more excited about anything ever.
This made me laugh. In a good way.
Anyone has invite left ? Please send one to prakaash@outlook.com

And here's another hobo that jumps on the invite train. If you have one to spare I'll sign up to be on the receiving end.

Working on a package for sublime text. If anyone got a invite to Atom so I can test it on both editors, that'd be awesome. Thanks! hi@bjornrostad.no
Check your inbox :)
Got it! Thanks Lynn.
An incredibly smart move for Github that echoes the sentiment behind Google making Chrome – own the environment your users spend their time in.
The modularity of this project is also impressive. Don't like the status bar/file tree/editor? Rewrite them.
I prettified their 'osx style' theme here: https://github.com/almonk/atomkit
So for those who have had beta invites, how are you finding it so far?
Used it for about 7 minutes. Don't really see why there is so much hype about it, if it gets widely adopted and people contribute to the plugins/themes/packages etc it might grow into something awesome but at the moment it's just a vanilla editor with some fluff that's been recycled from existing products. (inb4 crys of "it's only been out a day" etc etc)
At the moment the reason it is OMGBEZTEVARRRR is because of who it's by not what it actually is.
This is great! I think this awesome for competition. So far ST has been the only cowboy in the city. Brackets looks sweet but too slow. Anyway, awaiting my beta invite :)
