I have no clue what the purpose of this is.

I really liked Mailbox but had to stop using it when they added the swipe-from-left-edge action to open the drawer menu. It conflicts with the main action of Mailbox (swiping quickly to get rid of inbox items), constantly causing me to accidentally open the drawer.

A real shame and an example of why you should even test things that an OS or platform pushes as best practices.

You can actually turn that off in the Settings.

Just go to Settings -> Preferences -> Swipe right to view drawer (off)

Haha, I had a brief Twitter exchange with the developers about this. I'm glad they added this to the settings silently — I guess any fanfare would have been a mea culpa of design failure!

Neat, I guess. Not really clear on what the purpose of this is though.

Mailbox uses Instagram photos to display a pleasant splash image when you hit inbox zero as kind of a reward. For people who never dig themselves completely out, this is what that looks like.

For a page that is meant to show photographs from Instagram, they did an awful job at showing photographs from Instagram. The M mask is pretty sweet though.
