Feature Requests: Let's talk about Designer News.
over 10 years ago from Allan Grinshtein, Founder at LayerVault
What can we do to make this place better?
over 10 years ago from Allan Grinshtein, Founder at LayerVault
What can we do to make this place better?
Maybe searching, tagging, or filtering of posts?
Also, ability to bookmark to read later or for future reference could be really handy.
+1 on searching, at least by post title.
+2 on searching
+7 on searching, and +1 on bookmarking.
+2 on bookmarking :)
++++ that'd be awesome!
+1 to search and favoriting!!
Another +1 for search so that I feel confident I'm not posting a dupe.
+another for searching.
+1 for searching and adding posts to custom "buckets" for reference later.
Another point for a search option, maybe by categories or tags something like that ?
If DN can offer an API, I will build a search client
+8 on search. Google can be used with site:https://news.layervault.com, but a nicely themed search that's integrated into the site would be even better.
+++++ (I lost count) hell yes to searching please!
yes! good 'ol search bar would be handy, assuming DN maintains an archive. helpful to read existing answers to questions (ex. i just google searched for grid recommendations/advice)
Search, definitely.
Yup. Search +++
I created a little tool that lets you search DN. http://designersearch.900dpi.com/ Enjoy!
+1 for the ability to bookmark
+1 for bookmarking/read later
+1 for bookmarking.
+1 for bookmarks/favourites as per my post here - https://news.layervault.com/stories/25916-a-suggestion-for-dn.
The ability to remove/delete your own posts.
Ability to edit a post after publishing. Maybe only 10min or so after if you are concerned with people changing it after a conversation has started. I recently titled a post 'Ask:' instead of 'Ask DN:' and just wanted to change that!
I'm not sure if this has been posted already but I'd like to see an archive of the comments and stories you've posted on profile pages.
Agreed.
Yes please! I would really like to see a history of all posts I made. I commented in a story somewhere but I cannot find it anymore. It's so frustrating because it had a list of links I really need.
I wish comments were ranked by points, HN style.
Also, notifications of some sort to see replies.
Can I see the posts I've added and threads where I'm participating quickly?
Not at the moment.
An icon for the iOS homescreen would be great!
+1 for apple-touch-icon
Yeah!
+1 this along with the other comment on getting a mobile format setup would really be nice. Or maybe down the road release an API to maybe make a native iPhone app once this site gets more features.
There's an app in the appstore now!
Fixed
Leaderboard by weekly and all time. Or sortable leaderboard by Karma.
When a link is deleted, can the author get an email notification about it (along with a reason) ?
The ability to see what posts you’ve upvoted.
+1
Must have feature IMHO
Also, some sort of notification when someone replies to your post.
Additionally, ability to "follow" a post to keep up with the discussion might be nice.
This would be great. At the moment, it seems like points on a comments doesn't matter.
open source it, let people open PR's
Bug: If you are on the reply screen to a existing reply you cannot upvote this reply.
Request: Clean up this thread lol
One more... I want to delete a story which I posted. I just realised I it's a double post.
The ability to add your Twitter username would be fantastic!
Allow authors to edit a post once it has been posted. I forgot you support markdown so I would have gone back and edited it for markdown.
Save for later.
+1 or favorites section
+1 for ability to delete posts
The ability to save your favorite links :)
Oh, and an API, yes an API! I'd love to see what other developers will come up with :)
+1 for an API
+1, I'd love to use it to build the equivalent of HackerWeb for DesignerNews.
Can I see the posts I've added and threads where I'm participating quickly?
Why not just have regular Twitter integration? I find that the community is quite familiar with each other's Twitter avatar than with names.
Love it
I'd really like to see profiles actually. Hacker News does a terrible job of this. Let the influencers achieve credibility. In return they'll post more.
"Let the influencers achieve credibility"
Do you mean showing their rank or karma? Kelly actually has some interesting ideas about how ranking that's a little more useful than straight-up karma.
Something more than karma would be good.
What about a ratio instead?
+1. Would be nice if I could, at the very least, have some kind of link in my profile for people to follow-up with me if they don’t want to ask for my contact info in a thread.
Podcast icon.
Seeing a lot more podcast things pop up.
agreed!
Absolutely.
Can we have a "Reset" button for our cover photos and profile photos? It's easy to get carried away with the tap pixels, and then hard to undo the madness.
It would be really nice if the RSS feed included links to comments for every post (similar to how reddit does it). Hate having to leave my feed reader to go find the post on the site.
Maybe even a count of the number of comments a post receives at the time the feed is published?
A Critique This post-type would be cool to join the addition of "Show DN", "Ask", "Apple", etc.
Over the past year there has been talk, blame, and mud-slinging around many social networks for designers, primarily Dribbble, about the purpose, comments, and more.
It would be cool if we could begin to tackle the challenge of providing sound, reliable and helpful feedback here on DN. A simple "Critique" post-type and badge would let DN users know that someone is open to hearing feedback!
Thoughts?
Interesting. There's a germ of an idea there.
How bout adding autofocus to search box for when we click search stories?
One improvement could be removing anything after a "?" in a URL
Example: www.example.com?campaign=twitter+page=3 Would become: www.example.com
Shouldn't you get a karma point if your post gets a comment? I'd argue that creating conversation is more valuable to the community than an upvote! Just a thought.
J
This!
It's been discussed several times in the past (at least as far back as 9 months ago: https://news.layervault.com/stories/7817-do-comments-on-dn-add-to-karma), but it's never been implemented... Why?
More of a bug than feature request:
I received a new reply on a thread that was deleted before I could check it. Now I permanently have "1 Reply" stuck on my dashboard.
Post editing/deleting within a brief window after posting. For those posts where you're so excited you misspell something or "I just accidentally posted twice! Sorry!"
+1 on this one. Spelled lots of stuff wrong myself :)
Hello guys, I got an idea that could be useful if you are a DN Power User that bookmarks interesting posts...
Here's an image so you can see how would this look: http://i.imgur.com/gGNkXHl.png
Bugfix requested: when you upvote a comment that's above another comment or comments (the other comments' parent), it removes all the upvote link for all child comments.
The ability to click on a color earned in a user profile that then shows a list of users who have said color. Great way to find out who was at a meetup or who was part of something that earned them a color. This essentially splits DN into groups which might not be a good thing. Who knows.
I really need this. When a MOTD is changed I can't find it anymore. Please make a collection like "MOTD history" therefore if I want to see/share a motto, I can easily find it. Hall of Fame/Shame is not the enough I think.
Would love to see all posts I've made, so I can go back to those later on. Sorry for saying this, but a bit like hackernews. It doubles as a "favorites" section, since anything I deemed worthy posting in was obviously awesome. ... (or terribad!)
Upvoting history! #upvote
New jobs posted since I visited that page
Now that Markdown is supported, having a preview of the post/comment would be cool.
You know that one message at the top of the page? The top comment?
A link to its post would be nice.
That's actually the MOTD, not a link to the top comment.
Heh, so where does that come from?
See the "Edit" button next to it? You can change it with that.
Didn't quite get it until I did it ;)
Perhaps quitting on caffeine wasn't the brightest idea. Brb, 'ccino time.
I would like to see this as well.
It's not like that. You can change it too. If you click "edit", you can type in a new message. It's not sourced from any other page or thread :]
I'm not sure on which site I saw this, but on a site that I posted to once, they had a super neat auto-generated Title field, which, if no title is initially provided, took the tag from the URL provided is entered into the Title field. It was super handy, and I'd like to see it here on DN.
Ability to edit typos in Post Title after submission
This really needs to be implemented. Please :) with sugar on top!
There is a huge influx of users who keep sending me to things like "100 hotel icons" which should read "Please buy my set of 100 hotel icons I created, here's the link"
Can we PLEASE include a checkbox that asks if you are promoting yourself, or linking to something for sale? Then we could add a css class around each of these post and allow users to see when we are being fed junk. We're getting a lot of new users self promoting themselves, and not with interesting articles or news. They are promoting something for sale. This really irks me, and already I've started to cut down on my reading of DN, because often when I click it a link it's a "Top 10 type of post"
I really love the site, lets keep it news, and fix or clear up that people should not be submitting some icons they have for sale or their latest weather app they want us to buy…
Make it open source. After that: watch the goodness happen.
search
Bug report: I changed my email address in the profile, but login only works using the invited email address.
Same happened to me.
being able to @mention how facebook handles it in addition to notifications would really be able to drive home a sense of community.
Maybe a feature request section that isn't a big long comment thread.
Currently, one big problem in Designer news is the amount of duplicate content being posted. However, this is in no way the user's fault, but instead, an UX flaw that urges users to search for similar content manually before posting anything.
Sometimes, a user just wants to share something he found interesting and not spend more than 30 seconds inside Designer News just to make sure his content is not already available.
The current structure has more serious implications such as the amount of comments that sometimes may feel a little "hostile" saying things like
"Come on this again?"
"Another link on that subject"
"This has been posted here before already"
which in no way contribute to a healthy discussion, but only point fingers blaming the user who just wanted to share nice content with fellow designers.
I suggest that Designer News create an auto-fill option, like http://stackoverflow.com does when a user is typing a new question, as it searches for keywords, urls, inside that question an populate a suggestions section pointing to possible similar results.
This way, the user who is posting content, can quickly perceive his content has already been shared and can instead contribute to that previously posted question by up-voting or commenting.
Designer news is a hub for UX and UI super stars, you guys know more than anyone that things like these happen and it is in no way the users fault but instead it is a flaw in the way the information is presented and induct its users to perform actions that sometimes might not lead to correct or expected results.
Hopefully you guys can take a look on this and make this community a more friendly place to be.
Link to my DN question that sparked this feature request (https://news.layervault.com/stories/38537-multiposts-on-dn).
Basically, when people are in the process of adding a new stuff, they see (potentially) similar questions so they don't risk posting the same thing as someone else. Stack Overflow does this very well.
I didn't see if this was mentioned before, but I think it would be nice to subscribe to a post and get notifications if someone posts additional comments. I know this happens to your own posts, but it would be nice to be able to watch other posts for new activity.
I just searched for that option, but didn't find it!
+1
I was confused with the invitation creation process.
I typed in a person's email and was given the link for the invite URL, but it was a clickable link so, I thought y'all were giving me access to an otherwise redundant account.
I emailed the URL to my friend so hopefully he got the invite and can join.
But please fix that whole process. Don't make the invite URL show up as clickable link when I generate an invite. Tell me to copy and paste the URL into an email if that's how it works because that was really confusing.
A "reset" button for the pixel avatar and image header. It'd be nice to draw a new one, but not if I have to manually clear the grid.
Thank you.
It's been asked before, but perhaps a poll option would be nice.
BUG: when you have a reply but then an admin delete the conversation you have "1 Reply" on the left forever
Account deletion.
Linked Badges: Clicking on a badge would give you a filtered view for all posts of the particular type of badge you clicked.
Not sure if this is a good idea or not but I'm just gonna throw it in here. Now that comments are sorted by popularity by default, maybe do the same for the replies to the comments à la reddit?
Thought of a couple badges that would be neat to have: - Photoshop (especially since we have a Sketch one now) - Tutorial (would be helpful I think to quickly see which posts lead to tips/tutorials)
"Remember Me"
It'd be great if DN showed up on Google Analytics as a referral, cause now it shows an direct traffic, probably because of the redirection. Thanks!
+1 for this!
The ability to favourite a post.
Show newest comments first, and/or ability to sort comments.
Feature request: I take it you use the news.layervault.com redirects on posted links for analytics somehow. Letting us see analytics for our posts, either individually or generally, would be amazing.
That crossed my mind. It would be a lot of fun.
Posted this deep in a different thread a few days ago but gonna dump it here too.
I'd consider hiding the MOTD's up- and downvotes until you've actually voted. Might make it less one-sided at times.
How's about a Bio section? Would really love to read more than a single line about what people do, what their interests are, where they live, etc. (pretty much whatever they want to say)
More Post Badges.
I thought of one for tech/computer tips, "TIP:"
The ability to search through comments. Amazon and Yelp do this pretty well. I would do wonders on a thread like this one!
The ability to see all of the posts you've made.
Links to user posts & comments (http://d.pr/i/1L2h)
note: I am not sure this is posted already, sorry if it is.
Oh, and an irc client on your server :p Can't really get away with installing mIRC here :p
Ability to edit comment, and edit comments, inline (without a page reload). At the moment, it loads whole new "write your comment" page. Good example of this done well is GitHub Issue comments.
Found a bug... You cannot 'up vote' a comment in this screen which is a direct link to a reply of a post. https://news.layervault.com/comments/29390
Filter post by badge
Early adopter avatar color: Earned by upvoting a certain amount of threads that become popular (front page or maybe top 10) when they have less than a certain number of votes (5? 10?) within a given time frame (lets say 7 days).
You would need some upvote spam protection, which could be beneficial for the site anyway.
Could you please auto focus the search input when you enter the search page? It bothers me every time. Thanks!
Need more contrast between Active and Visited links.
Its hard to differentiate them in my Windows PC - Chrome [LCD Monitor]
I need to move my heads vertically everytime.
Hard!!!!
I think, Previously it was nice
When the colour for karma(points, whatever) got implemented a while back, I claimed that the quality of the content of the site would decline. Recently I've been seeing a lot of calls for the downvote button due to the amount of awful content. Would it be possible for this feature to be reviewed?
So, I just opened up the designer news page and was like WOOAAHHHH. Everything has changed. I am totally all for iteration, but I think this one may have taken a step back. Here is some feedback.
It's actually harder to read now, with the font change. Gill sans is a tough one at small sizes, I think.
With the images now included in the container (instead of laying outside of it), my eye now has to jump from right to left as I scan down the page. It was really nice to have the ability to just follow the icons on the left, then scan right when I wanted to see what the content actually was.
Also, this may have been there before, but there is a lot of text under each headline. I think the headlines might benefit from a bit more white space, or the removal of some of the secondary text.
Just thoughts from another designer. This is an awesome service, and I appreciate all the awesome work that has gone into it.
Thanks!
Is any of this stuff still being worked on?
I'd like to contribute the mobile stylesheet. I have a feeling I could knock the bulk of that out in a few hours.
Yes, we pay attention and this list helps prioritize things that we're working on.
I'm sure everyone said it already but there is mine: - Mobile responsive - Notification when someone comment your post - Short link for sharing
Search. Please. Search.
Until search is implemented, I've been using a google search like so: site:news.layervault.com
Just checked this. This is incredibly helpful. Thanks!
They've implemented search natively since then. You may already know about it, but just in case: https://news.layervault.com/search
Allow a user to change his vote. If they hit the down arrow by accident there is no undo. My gut feeling is they should always be there, just have an active/inactive state similar to reddit.
This site definitely needs duplicate check
.\
Don't have time? Give me the tables and I'll write the code. I don't believe it'll take more than 30 minutes :)
Please use jquery shortcut.js to allow the arrow keys to go to the next page.
Got a 404 error, when I clicked to submit a comment. This is why my post is a duplicate.
Please use jquery shortcut.js to allow the arrow keys to go to the next page.
+1 for notifications.
I've been a good boy and used search to prevent a duplicate post. But adding a comment in a forgotten topic is pointless because nobody will ever see it.
A list of all topics where you have been active in would be nice too. And perhaps it could be a temporary replacement for the notifications. This way we can manually check if something new came up in discussions we have participated in.
Markdown formatted comments.
Edit: Thank you for implementing this!
When I submit something, and it's already been submitted, show me the submission so I can upvote it.
-Make the Karma go to the original poster, not the duplicates, or don't let post duplicates.
-More info in the profiles, I've encountered myself with quality content coming from a person, and I had to look his name in google to find more about him and his work, when it could be a click away on his profile.
-Search
-Filters/categories
-Notifications.
-Link to our post and comments.
-Downvote (?)
Automatically delete Dribbble shots?
With the amount of shameless selfpromotion and irrelevant posts, it is getting a critical for a downvote button or another way to filter out these posts.
I'd love to see a job board similar to that of Hacker News or Dribbble.
The user should be able to check post history. So they can go back and check all the posts they ever made.
Next / previous page mapped to the arrow keys. Best thing Tumblr ever invented and now I miss it everywhere else.
I really doubt that Tumblr invented that.
Forgot my password - password recovery.
I'd love to be able to see my upvoted topics.
Filter themes (CSS, Ask, Apple, Type, etc) clicking on the theme badge
Can I change my email that I got invited with? I'd love to stay up to date with designerNews.
A down vote button. It seems like the up vote button doesn't filter out bad content fast enough.
Ability to edit titles too.
I'd like to be able to resize the text area vertically to make it easier to re-read and edit my post for content before I submit it. Also, is it possible to edit posts after the fact if we notice an error or want to make a correction?
Yeah, for typos too!
+1 for being able to edit posts after they go live.
It might be nice to include link detection in the comments section (so a link is automatically active instead of just plain text).
And yes, a way to see what I've upvoted.
Something like http://news.ycombinator.com/best
I came here to say the same thing! About once a week I type news.layervault.com/best just to see if it's a thing :)
Been said, but +1: - Post/comment tracking - Ability to remain logged in - Search
Not sure if it's been suggested: - Markdown in comments?
Regarding the duplicate posts - these mostly tend to be resources. Things that people may want to find easily for reference. I think there may be something between designer resources and designer news.
But in all honestly just give me some gifs
The ability to up/down vote comments & down vote posts would be helpful as well.
+1 up/down vote comments and down vote posts
+1 on comment votes
+1 on comment voting.
+1 on all of these - it's all too common for bad posts to hang out on the front page just because people are adding comments that they don't like the article :)
Sorry, can't edit my previous posts, but a notification when you've got a new comment on a post would be nice too. Perhaps something like the 'invite' icon.
Still a great idea. Have not found it in the system... yet.
Also, I would love to use this service as my default bookmark service for design amazing links. Can I somehow relate links that I like to my account?
Search and categorization would definitely help
How about we have Hall Of Fame kind of option which is decided on basis of how popular and help the link was for community so that person who is visiting first time know some good articles or links from past.
Kunal
Validation on URL needs to be updated. Throwing error on submissions with URL w/ legitimate TLDs (.nyc, .book etc..)
Ability to minimise comment thread? Wading and scrolling through all the responses from an initial comment, just to get to the second comment, can be tiresome.
Click the first user's avatar icon and the entire comment will be collapsed. Click it the second time to reveal it.
Had a post deleted, but before it was blasted, there was a reply outstanding that I never saw. Now, I have a constant "1 Reply" on my profile.
It would be so useful if I could see my list of Upvoted posts.
Searching this thread I found that people have been requesting this for two years now, so I'm not very hopeful it will happen, but having joined DN very recently, I thought I'd share the only thing I'm missing from it.
The ability to link to comments (preferably by making the date a hyperlink to the comment) without having to Inspect Element and find the comment div
's id
.
You mean like this? https://news.layervault.com/comments/125035
Right click the Reply link and copy the URL.
A link to the comments in the RSS feed would be awesome
DN :
vs. HN :
Hey, this is Gary from http://medicalassistantschoolsedu,com. For me Icon for the IOS homescreen would be great.
Thanks
Can you at least tell me why my link has been deleted..... just so I know you respect your users....
Do Something About Search Please....
Check our site http://InspirationLove.net
Email notifications when someone replies to you so you can keep the conversation going :)
How to edit my question after I posted and found that I have some spelling mistakes?
A comments link on the RSS feed would be wonderful.
Cool service, ths
I have 1 Reply in the sidebar but when I click on it nothing happens.
The ability to bookmark MOTDs would be great. I've lost so many good tips that I cant' find.
Can the mods/admins look into my account? I seem to have a "1 reply" notification but it leads nowhere & I just get redirected to the homepage.
Not the biggest of deals but the minor OCD that I pretend to have is slightly bothered by it :D
With people like this on here, I would like a block function preventing me from seeing any comments or posts by the blocked person.
1) Adding a 'credibility score' to each person's profile based on the quality of inputs/comments that guy/girl provides.
2) Tagging most active/relevant users as 'power users' and you can use a $1 fee to reach out specifically to these power users.
When posting to DN, it would be really useful to be able to add both the link to an external link and a short description, and that description should be available on the RSS feeds list. When reading feeds from DN on my RSS reader, I find it frustrating that most links don't have any description other than the title (not so meaningful most of the times). Unless I am willing to open them each time, I might miss interesting articles.
Double digit ordered lists ain't so hot: https://news.layervault.com/stories/35262-ask-dn-whats-your-photography-setupworkflow#Comment105421
Can you please send a notification when a URL a member has posted has been deleted by the admin, as well as a reason (duplicate link, inappropriate, admin felt the new version of the same link was better than the first, etc.) Thanks.
I have a '1 Reply' link in my sidebar, but when I click it I just get a refreshed DN homepage. I think the post that I replied to has been deleted? Anyways, not sure if this will time out and disappear - its been there about a week now.
I have exactly the same problem.
Would love a separate place to post design events, I don't want to spam all of DN with SF specific events.
Edit of a new post when there are no comments yet.
I think it would be nice to see the hometown next to people names in the comments. That way one could reach out to other designers in the home cities via twitter or some other source.
Would love to filter by more options than just the Discussions view. Being able to see just SHOW, Video, Apple, etc. stories.
Also a new category for "Portfolios" would be very welcomed seeing as with the new open registration we're getting a lot of portfolio sites in the top feed asking users for feedback. It's ok, i just would like a way to browse all DN users portfolios separately.
And add post edit feature.
Please make search feature more usefull. You know 'search' is the important thing.
Starring relevant discussions/threads to refer back later.
When I click the login button on a story page, after successfully logging in I expect to be redirected back to the story page, not the home page.
If I login to comment on a story but the I get redirected back home, I have to find the story again.
Autofocus input on search page
<input type="text" autofocus>
Reply notifications currently come from "news@layervault.com". The same address used for the weekly digest. It would be nice if it would come from a different address so folks (like me ;-) who like tidy inboxes can filter them separately.
Thx ;)
Am I misunderstanding karma or is it broken?
I currently have 0 karma but at least a few points from my comments (not from posts). Oh, and the points aren't just my own--I have a whopping 9 points from one comment!
It doesn't seem likely that one can only receive karma for posting conent, but is that the case? If so, what's the point of upvoting a comment (besides it going higher up in the thread)
Thanks.
Permalinks to comments
Would love to see a way to favorite stories much like Twitter.
A way to delete or edit your own post. I was typing on my iPad and accidentally double posted an unfinished question.
If I search for ' background' I get a 500 error
Please use the feature requests link in the footer for feature requests.
Edit: oops, wrong post.
Medium icon in the sidebar: I went ahead and made a 100x100 .EPS here: http://tcae.us/WMdd
Knowing why a post is removed. My first post was easily in-game according to the guidelines, and is not evidently a duplicate, but removed for no apparent reason. Understanding what was wrong with it would be helpful.
Let use change our e-mail address in the settings. Mine is from my past company. So I do not know low long it will be active.
sorry, commented on the wrong thread but can't seem to delete it 0_o
Dear LV peeps,
An overview of all past AMA's would be hella cool.
Word.
I wonder if there should be a general favorites/pinned category that could be it's own section? I'm thinking of articles along the lines of these:
Something that may get lost in search, or wouldn't even be seen to people new to the site.
How about a better place for feature requests? Not fun to scroll down to see new ones.
Not sure if something like this is in there but having some contact info and website URL on profiles would be useful.
The comment field auto-expands when clicked, but the text field used when submitting a new story doesn't.
Can you guys hide our personal information from source page? :) Thank you.
view-source:https://news.layervault.com/u/1470/riza-seluk-saydam *"$email"
That's part of our Mixpanel analytics code. Your email isn't visible to others.
Please, make the texarea a bit more taller. 3 lines it makes really painful when you want to answer other people. It's nice to say 1 or 2 lines answers, but if you want to contribute better it's a pain. 10 lines should make it or make some nasty JS that increases while you type. Thanks!
✓ Fixed
I've been trying to invite a friend since last night and it didnt work. Someone mention reading the instructions. Is there DN manual for how to invite someone?!
I would be nice to have an API to add new stories.
For some reason I was just alerted of replies to my comment (2nd comment) on this thread. The comments were made a month ago. Was this something you guys did or is it a bug?
A user went back and edited/removed all of his past comments. It caused a lot of "reply" notifications to get fired. I got a few myself.
Can you add the correct attributes to the login form so chrome will save my password? :)
A stats page showing what day/time DN is most active, how many posts are posted per hour/day/week, etc. would be neat!
Custom Post Badges (Like "ASK DN:" "Show DN:")
Bug: When I go to this link, DN mysteriously says I'm logged out. That link is from clicking the title on the recent stories. If I click the comments, it loads fine. If I go to another page, I'm logged in.
The bug is that you discovered that subdomain. It's for internal API traffic only. We're working on making sure that api-news.layervault isn't ever given as a response URL.
Just wondering if you take into account the amount of clicks the links get (not just time / upvotes)?
Bookmarklet: Whenever I go to http://mmenu.frebsite.nl/ and try to use the bookmarklet, I get a 500 error from LV. I can use the bookmarklet on other pages just fine.
I think we need the ability to add more to profiles. When I want to repost a story or something from DN I want to quickly credit the person I found it from. Or even just to learn more about the people on DN.
Not sure I understand. Can you elaborate on what you mean?
Sure.
When I click your name it takes me to your profile. From there I can see your points, posts, etc.
What I can't do is learn more about Allen G. Does he have a website? A twitter? A dribble?
For me this would not only let me get to know the community but also allow me to credit them when I repost those link that they share.
Automatic link hyperlinking in posts and comments.
Hacker News has an "Add to Pocket" link for those of us who use the service with the Chrome Extension - would be nice to see the same here.
Visited Links not working when visited directly.
Suppose, If I visited www.layervault.com directly, Then if there is a post in DN redirects to the same site, doesn't seems like visited because now you are using URL like ../click/XXX.
Any fix for this?
$0.01 thing.
Footer is broken for me.
Fixed when I changed this in DevTools
#Footer #BeNice { margin-right: 90px; }
to
#Footer #BeNice { margin-right: 89px; }
What device are you using? It looks pretty small.
1600 x 900 Monitor.
Also, could you update the original post? All the items mentioned on what you have so far have been implemented.
Bug: I've noticed that when I or someone else posts a Tuts+ article with the bookmarklet, the + is stripped from the title, leaving it to say something like "Tuts Web Design Tutorial" when it should say "Tuts+ Web Design Tutorial".
Noted. Probably has to do with how the bookmarklet encodes (or doesn't encode) things for the URL parameter.
I like the recent change of linking the RSS item to the page linked, it really makes it a lot more useful. There are times that I'm still interested in the discussion, though. It might be useful to have a link to the comment thread in the item description, similarly to this alternative HN RSS feed
It would be nice to be able to link to individual comments on a post.
I know this may be more of a personal opinion kind of thing, but I'd like to view all posts by a user, or at least my history of posts.
No, you're not the only one — this is something I want too. We're going to add this.
Awesomesauce! Can't wait!!!
Embeddable video? And tags for posts with embedded video?
You know what I'd like? If the new story page would notify people that their post might be a repost. Doesn't have to be fancy, just something like this:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/802078/Screenshot.png
The code I used for the test in the screenshot is pretty simple. You can try it out using this snippet: (paste and run in your developer tools console at the submit page, and then fill out the form!)
function checkExistingResultCount(event) { var searchString = event.target.value, target = $(event.target), log = $('#log-' + event.target.id), log = log.length ? log : target.after('<div id="log-' + event.target.id + '"></div>').next(), type = target.is('#StoryTitle') ? 'post\'s title' : 'posted URL', searchableString = searchString.replace(/ /g, "+").replace("http://",""), query = "https://news.layervault.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query=" + searchableString + "&commit=Search", printResultCount = function(html) { var resultString = $(html).find('.SearchResults').text(), resultCount = resultString ? Number(resultString.match(/\d+/)[0]) : 0; log.html("<p>We've found " + resultCount + " result" + (resultCount === 1 ? "" : "s") + " for " + searchString + " (check the <a href='" + query + "'>search page</a>).</p>") }; $.get(query, printResultCount); } $('#StoryTitle, #StoryUrl').on('blur', checkExistingResultCount);
We do this already by checking the submitted URL. It will notify you if it's been posted before.
Awesome. I didn't know (I guess I've never made a repost before). Got the idea from the flatvsrealism.com repost. That one must've somehow ignored your notification.
Sorry for suggesting an already implemented feature. I'll try to do my research a bit better next time!
When editing a comment, the Markdown supported little help doesn't appear. It would be great to knoe the features supported when editing.
Be able to search for user names and then traverse to the posts/comments that user made. Post / comments are not linked up from a user profile yet.
Updated Avatar Gallery something like this for me on Win 7 - Chrome. My Issue???
Edit: Its Working Fine Now. Thanks
It'd be great to have more data and more consistency between RSS, ATOM, JSON responses. Currently RSS/ATOM don't have vote counts or number of comments. RSS doesn't have author but ATOM does.
Also, it would be awesome to have a character count on the MOTD, and perhaps a textarea instead of an input field. I just tried to share a quote and had a chunk of it cut off when I posted. If I had known the max-character length, I would have posted a shorter version (that I ended up posting anyway)... Thanks!
Bug issues here as well? I changed my 8-bit image in my profile but it is not live more than 24 hours later. When I click "edit" on the image, though, it shows the updated version...
It's a cache issue. We'll fix it.
I have no idea what the Designer News Twitter account is. It'd be nice to have that somewhere.
There is no official DN twitter account.
Well, there should be. :)
A very small bug: there is a typo just below the comments. It says "x mos ago" or you did so for minimalism?
I don't think it's a typo, just a different way of spelling Months. "mo." is a common abbreviation for "Month", so it's not a stretch to think of "mos" as "Months" (see it as "mo.s").
Opening links in iframe like stumbleupon
(with this feature, we can easly upvote or write comment to links, without this feature after clicking link lots of people don't go back to write comment or upvote)
My feeling about this is that most users would flip out if we did this, even if it was more convenient. See the Diggbar for example.
We would.
Seconded. Or thirded, whatever.
Can you please change how the RSS works? It is pointless for the item's link to point to DesignerNews... Just place the post link for this website in the RSS item's comment. This way, you can directly access to the link someone shared, and you can come to DN in order to check for its comments.
I'd suggest : - Link checker for possible duplicate content - 'Report' link to report bad post
We already do this. If you try to submit duplicate content, we throw a big red warning.
ah I see ... but why there are still duplicate contents around? pls check : https://news.layervault.com/stories/8984-hostmania--hulk-hogan-web-hostinghttps://news.layervault.com/stories/8894-hulk-hogan-does-web-hosting
Today I saw three same links in front page. It was about medium's headline animation. Could you check that?
I don't feel like trying to post a duplicate just to test the function, so what's the state of this feature/function? I've been seeing a lot of duplicate posts lately.
What service do you use for web hosting? Apps you use a lot lately. How do you organize and manage your fonts? Where are some nice Keynote templates? Favorite case studies? Best way to save logos for web? Any tutorials for designing app animations/transitions within After Effects? Favorite typography blogs? Where to find great colour schemes? 1Password or Wallet or X? Where is the best place to learn code? Which mousepad is best? And so on...
I see alot of same (stupid) questions over & over, so maybe it's time for downvote button or some sort thing? People are here mostly for links, resources & discussions, not for stupid questions that can be solved by 1 min googling.
I'm not able to invite anybody, the submit button doesn't work. I've tried in Chrome, FF, and IE. Please fix!
It works. Are you sure you read the instructions.?
Maybe you could create an icon/section something like "just for fun" where users can posts funny things. These kind of links often goes to the section wehre users can post all kind of things that don´t really relate to news and designer but we´re just humans and sometimes need a good laugh (maybe for inspiration?)
I'd really like to be able to "follow" certain users and see when they post or comment.
The ability to favourite a story or a list of everything you've upvoted.
I want to be able to change email for login.
Ability to follow a story and receive notifications when a new post is made (similar to Quora).
A weekly digest
I'd like to be able to actually post something. If my post is being denied, please tell me why.
How about a Twitter feed with the top 5 posts tweeted out every day. Something small and elegant.
You could build that yourself with our RSS feed. We don't own or control the handful of twitter bots that tweet out.
A public API would be wicked cool.
Simple list of everything I've voted up.
Filtering on sections, like Dribbble, Site Design and Ask DN.
An error message after trying to post something that can't be posted would be nice.
Portfolio links on profiles would be appreciated.
I would like the ability to delete a post. For example right now I have something I'd love to get feedback on from the DN community but I don't want the idea to live on the Internet forever because I want to reduce the changes of someone replicating the idea.
Search would be amazing!
P O L L S
-- Able to Edit/Delete posts -- Clickable Karma/Posts/Comments by User -- Search for content / Filter by Category --Total votes should display on Detailed page too. --Need Action to view existing post when duplicate post found
I'm sure it has been said quite a few times before, but having an API would be great.
Group Duplicates… Allow duplicated submissions, tag them to the first one, so the first one has a tiny arrow net to it to click and view multiple headlines? Reddit, Hacker News newer got this right.
But for now PLEASE remove duplicates :-) pretty please, I keep seeing duplicates :-D
Stop people posting links to their own content unless it is of genuine benefit to the community.
Rather than posting it purely for further exposure.
It would be able to mark posts as read or visited. When I switch computers, links I've visited before on a different machine display as new/unread.
Bucket list to add articles "to read later"
Searching definitely! Maybe an option of choosing what type of post you are submitting, Ask DN, Site, etc.
Command/Control + Enter to submit a comment.
Did you drop the white background for the DN content div? Please put it back!
I appreciate that “good design is as little design as possible” but that subtle framing of the content provided a way of determining the level of nesting for comments. Without the frame as a reference point users must scan the whole page to determine whether a comment is original or a response.
It would be really nice if links didn't open in a new tab. In addition to not being typical behavior, it's very annoying on Mobile Safari because I have a limited number of tabs.
Should be good to give link to posts and comments on profile page
I'd like to know how to get more invites! :)
Please enable us to search. +1
Hey guys, pasting some code symbols into comment boxes does screwy things with the comments. I've tried the "less than" and "greater than" symbols and it cuts off anything following.
Interesting... We'll look.
Hopefully an API will come out soon, and maybe even a native iOS App. But in the meantime, a homescreen icon would be great!
Does the invite button work at the moment ? Tried in Safari and FF to no avail.
We need an answer wiki (like Quora), which contains all good answers in one Ask DN
It is difficult to see the hierarchy of comments and replies at the moment with the subtle indent. Perhaps a vertical line for every level of reply?
Being able to click on Karma in my profile to see where I got my karma from (e.g. MOTD, posts) would be cool. As would being able to click Posts to see the posts I've made and Comments to see the comments I've made.
Having a check mark next to the posts I've upvoted instead of the up icon would be nice. Being able to click the type icons (e.g. "Show", the apple, "Ask", the podium with a browser on it) to see more posts of that type would be interesting as well.
I've had a few other ideas, but can't think of them right now. I'll let you know when I think of them.
+1 to - Being able to click the post relevant icons like mentioned, to bring up the 10-20 past posts in that group.
Remove the numbers not needed.
Tooltip explaining badges
I can NOT figure out what half the icons on the side of the articles mean. It's become rather distracting trying to figure it all out.
Otherwise, I am in love with this product!
Method for revisiting comment threads.
Yesterday I commented on a post. Today I realized I do not have an easy way to go back to that post to see what others have said.
I know it's already on the list, but a mobile layout is needed.
Name changes. Made a typo. :(
The text colors are really light, so light I find myself squinting to read what some things are saying. Also, not having to log-in every day would be nice (Remember me).
When you start going back into the archive, the titles overlap the numbers beside them (because of the 3 digits).
a way to favorite links to come back to at a later time would be awesome.
Just noticed that the invite functionality generates an invite token from the email address, but doesn't actually send the invite. I think it would be nice if it just went ahead and sent the invite automatically seeing as you already have the email.
I also like seeing the latest comments at the top, not sure if this is just me tho? Right now this feels especially awkward as the input for adding new comments is at the top of the page, while the latest comments are on the bottom.
+1 for this.
It's a small thing but seeing as this is a 'Designer' site I'd like to see crisp icons in the top bar: http://cl.ly/image/0Y2B1J142m0W. I understand they're SVG, but I'd gladly take crisp, pixel perfect icons over the few KB SVG saves…
Excited and looking forward to contributing to this community!
Some sort of system that lets you know when there are new replys to your comment would be great! I've been having a hard time trying to follow any conversations that are happening.
+1 for duplicate checking. That sounds like priority number 1.
Profile: Ability to see users old posts & vote actions within their user profile
dont know if its posted yet, but we need to expand the comments inline instead of showing them in another page.
+10000000000000
Twitter link on profile. Would like to be able to connect with some of these really smart people outside of DN.
Clickable links in comments. Looks awesome so far, keep it up!
onhover tooltips on icons/nav. would make it easier for new users.
search function?
+1 to everyone's comments about being able to see my own posts. I could feasibly use this as an alternative to bookmarking tools etc.
This ^
Comment editing.
Maybe it's just me but I think the comments are too narrow and/or spaced out (ex, an entire new line for the reply link). There's only 30 comments here and I did quite a bit of scrolling. This will become mayhem with 100+ comments.
As for responsive design.. make this site open source and I'll do it for you. :) I've been doing a lot of responsive stuff lately so I love doing it.
A search system to check double posts or just browse articles could be great !
We should delete a stupid similar comment too..
A minor tweak I'd like to see is increasing the indent width of nested comments. Right now it's difficult to navigate comment trees.
Or maybe alternate colors?
I'd like the ability to remove an upvote I've given (in case it was accidental, or I realize it was a duplicate post or what have you), and also to see a list of all the posts I've upvoted (perhaps this could live in the profile that many people have requested already).
Maybe comment upvoting as well, so a thread with many comments will have the most relevant or insightful comments first.
Not a big concern while it's still growing, but a bit further down the line search would be nice (though it's hard to do well), and maybe filtering by type of posts (badges) or time.
I would love to see all my up-voted posts somewhere.
+1000 I would LOVE this.. there's so much i want to keep track of for later, would love to have a repository of things i've up-voted.
Would love for it to update live as new posts are made so that I don't have to refresh as I leave the window open throughout the day. (It's been open all day)
I also have it in a pinned tab all day.
Even if it didn't live update it would be nice to know there is new content and its time to refresh.
Remember login, retina iOS icon and perhaps apple-mobile-web-app-capable meta tag (full screen), that is all. :)
Don't overdo it, it's simplicity is what makes it great.
+1 on remember login, driving me nuts!
I love the simplicity. I'll add my +1 on more detailed profile pages and searching.
