Ask DN: Domain Registrars?

Planning on moving away from GoDaddy. Who do you register your domains with and why?

    https://iwantmyname.com is by far the simplest solution out there, in my eyes anyway.

    Edit: Another note on iwantmyname is their one-click app library. Sure you can install wordpress, but you can also point your domain to Heroku, or set up blog.domain.com to point to Tumblr.

      +1 for this but do note that they tend to be a couple bucks more expensive than their competitors. Worth it in my opinion for a very nice UI.

      They also make transferring domains to them a breeze, and will actually do it for you (for free) if you give them your current registrar's login details.

    I like NameCheap. The name's a bit deceiving (they are affordable, but not THAT cheap) but I like their interface, and they're quite reliable.

      I prefer name cheap as well. One of the best DNS config interfaces I've seen. Great customer support. I just moved 7 domains there after a year of one domain and some of my hosting. Super happy.

      +1 for NameCheap. I've used them for around 6 years now with no problems.

      As you can probably guess, the price on their homepage ($4/year) is a promotional price for new registrations, and renewals run about $11/year.

      Another +1 here on NameCheap. I've used Dotster, Register, GoDaddy, MediaTemple & Ghandi but my favorite by far is NameCheap.

    I use Gandi. Their slogan tells it all: no bullshit™.

    But seriously, I don't think that the differences between registrars are big. I like my registrar because I'm used to it, with a great interface and everything, but having worked with others, not a big difference.

        Their service is great and their platform robust – I was initially ambivalent to use a registrar I that wasn't based in the U.S. and I hadn't heard very much about but have had a great experience.

        As a registrar, they definitely go out of their way to secure authorized reseller certifications for pretty much any common TLDs. I would also recommend purchasing .IO domains from them versus NIC.IO, what I presume to be the official registry.

        If customer service is critical, I would suggest Hover. They are always available, have beautiful and simple dashboard interface and streamlined the domain management user experience. Definitely my suggestion for most DN community members looking for a domain registry. It's worth noting that they do not support certain TLDs such as .IO.

    Check out DNSimple, they're very transparent and responsive... last time I submitted a support request, one of the owners was the one to put in the fix. They also support Anycast which (in my experience) has resulted in much faster propagation and name-resolution.

      I'm giving them a go too. I like their DNS setup for a lot of common services (Heroku, AWS, Github) which was seemingly difficult to do with bluehost.

    gandi.net for .io domains, namecheap for everything else. Also use namecheap for SSL certs.

    Good call! I'm using Hover for a while and I like it! The fact that they're owned by Tucows which I never heard anything bad about them is a good thing. I must admit the price isn't cheap compared to others but like I said before, I feel they play fair so I don't mind to pay a bit more for that :)

    I use http://www.easyname.com/en — they have a great interface to manage your DNS records and there have never been problems. It is the one and only registrar i was with for all my domains so i have no idea if others are better/worse with what they have to offer but i am really happy there.

    I went with Hover after GoDaddy bought Media Temple, and I had an offer code for an .io domain from the guys at Accidental Tech Podcast.

    Someone else mentioned Gandhi and now I'm a customer there too, hehe!

    http://Bluehost.com. I wouldn't necessarily recommend them, but I've been using them for so long I get a great price on things. However, I do think they give you first domain free if you sign up for hosting.

    Their landing page is incredibly ugly, but their control panel is decent.

    why do I use them?

    Unlimited domains on a $4/month account with a bunch of cms options. Can't really beat that. If you can.. tell me :)

    I've been using Don Dominio (http://www.dondominio.com/) for a few years and I'm not planing on moving my domains to anywhere else. They run Mr. Domain (http://www.mrdomain.com/) if you're not spanish.

    Best prices and support I've ever found. They usually run promotions and they even have a reward system too.

    EDIT: I forgot to say they offer free WHOIS Privacy.

    Namecheap. I moved after the big Godaddy exodus a year or two ago. Never been happier. And Route 53 for DNS. Previously Zerigo but they recently screwed everyone with a 10x+ price hike.
