Ask: How to Find a Designer

over 9 years ago from

Hey DN!

I've been a member of the community for a while now, but mostly as a admirer of design rather than a designer myself. I've taken the past few months learning design and working on a project, but I just can't seem to hone in my concept the way I envision it in my head— especially being fairly new to design. I was wondering if you guys might have a suggesting on possibly finding an up and coming designer or a designer that might be willing to help at a reasonable price. I am not looking for free or spec work, but rather nothing too expensive. I only have around $200 to spend being a student, but I know the value of design and want to make sure the project starts off on the right foot.

I know saying "I know the value of design..." and then only having only $200 to spare is a bit contradictory, but just looking for a possible helping hand. If the only answer is to save more money or roll with what I've got then I guess I'll do that. Just wanted to see what a community I value had to say.

Respect, Alex

Keep in mind too... depending on what you're doing and what the goals are... sometimes launching something a little rough is absolutely fine... the key is that it went live and it's a proof of concept.

Sometimes designers can get too wrapped up in nuances and lose their window of opportunity. I say finish it up the best you can, get it done and then refine from the things you learn. It'll also be easier to pull talent in if you've got something tangible to base things off of (even if it's a complete overhaul).

Yeah, I feel this way too at times. It's that tug of war between "pixel pushing" and launching with what you've got. Although I do agree about the window of opportunity, with the project I am working on I believe setting the right feel is key. It's more of a social experiment than a product/service.
