[DN Suggestion] New threads need to be approved by original members

over 3 years ago from , Front-end designer

Looking at this obvious SEO shill thread gave me an idea: https://www.designernews.co/stories/107532-rgb-to-hex-color-conversion-tool

There are tons of other threads like this. What if there was an approval process in place for each new thread (story)? I get that you would need more staff to do it, but maybe it could be done by members who have been here for a long time. I'd be happy to help and quickly browse through the "Awaiting approval" section whenever I come to DN.

If anyone wanted to, they could band together a new admin team for a subreddit and try drive traffic over...mods haven't given a shit about DN for years

Volunteer community mods might very well be a good idea. I check this site about twice a month now and it's just...sad.

there's already flagging/reporting features that should weed out this nonsense.

the problem isn't the site, it's the moderators or lack thereof. seems that the site's been utterly abandoned, except for promoted posts and job board.

Being honest, I haven't had as much time to moderate in recent months, just due to work/life balance.

When I am on here, I actively continue to check out stories and moderate where necessary, but as many of you have said in the past and still do... there is so much spam sometimes it just makes me think what's the point? Will we always have spam just because that's how some people like to use their lives and energy?

the flagging/reporting system coupled with the upvoting system should be enough to combat this on an average day. Don't touch low quality spammy posts and/or report them -- and more importantly, upvote quality links and share fresh content you find yourself!

The only problem then will be that the spam gets upvoted by lame voting rings which are harder to detect because multiple accounts pushing content higher. But the real/interested users like ourselves should be able to overpower with quality/help mitigate with reporting.

    Quality/fresh new content posts up!

How does one become a moderator for DN? Genuinely curious and serious about helping.

This feels like post-by-committee. Not sure it would improve things. I’ve seen people snap at innocent designers for posting their portfolios or side projects — which are perfectly legit items post.

Maybe the committee would need to find and post a minimum amount of great content each week as their responsibility too.
