TEDx Talk: Humans, not Users. Why UX is a Problem. (youtube.com)

I take real issue with the term "Human Experience". It reeks of a human-centric worldview reinforced by centuries of people-dominated society. What about non-human users, like dogs, AIs, API clients, or cryptocurrency entrepreneurs?
That's why I personally prefer the inclusive term "Being Experience". Here at Being Deluxe Design Studio we really try to focus on all five kingdoms of life (don't forget about those prokaryotes!), and after our workshops many CEOs have told us they now understand the importance of including houseplants in their personas.
[I'll admit I didn't watch the video… but I couldn't resist just based on the title, sorry!]
For a second there I thought you were being serious.
I like your thinking Sacha! Btw, my fridge is a huuuge fan of your newsletter!
Great talk, Johannes.
However, I do agree with Barry, I don't really buy into the whole, let's switch one word, and everything is good (humans vs. user). User Experience Design is supposed to take everything into account, not just short-term goals. It becomes more of a distinction between good UX and bad UX. There will always be bad UX everywhere and wrong business models that don't take user contexts and lives into account.
Nonetheless, I can relate with your story as to why you got into design, and I do fundamentally agree that designers (and businesses! not just designers...) should be more conscious of how their products impact millions of lives on and off the screens.
Thanks for pursuing this path, we need more of you!
Hey Louis, thank you so much for your feedback, much appreciated!
The real drama with UX design is that it takes humans only i to account while they are using a product - more use, better user, better product.
However the issue with this is that it actually results in products that don't think about how they can serve us anymore, but they get used more. That is what we need to change!
I agree that switching out a term is not the solution. Switching perspective though needs to be the beginning. It is a challening journey, and we designers need to take it together :)
Wow! Thx for sharing!
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed this.
Well done, Johannes. The title made me a bit sceptical, but very well delivered, a nice message and important topic.
Were you able to measure the impact of the green circles vs red in your chat app, even if just qualitatively?
Thank you so much Barry, that means a lot! About the chat app: I will turn this into a separate story, this is a really interesting story. We saw very positive impact for the green circles, but more in details later :)
Great stuff. Look forward to hearing more.
