My initial reaction: "Holy shit. Is this a joke? haha" –– that camera is set up is intense.
I love Apple's product pages. They're always so good, imo. Wish they made new phones with the size of the iPhone 7.

I've upgraded from a 6s to an XR a few months ago and I still find the size of the new phone to be enormous IMO.
They did make a phone the size of the 7 - its called the iPhone 8.
el-oh-el
the 11 pro dark green colour is sexy as hell
no thanks, i'm holding out for the iPhone 9.
I feel that. I'm waiting for Windows 9 myself. ;)
Symmetry my friend!
After so many years of such well designed products, I can't help but feel the stuck-on look of that camera pod is a result of "oh shit, we forgot to do three-cameras like the other guys, quick pop one on there before anyone notices!"
I'm not a fan of the camera bumps but I highly doubt they were an afterthought. My guess is the internals required a little more room and the camera bump was the best compromise. Get a case and the bump is a non-issue, plus your phone is better protected from accidental drops.

"Apple had to make extra space in the slim phone to fit the components in... buy a case and make your phone fatter to hide the lump"
Am I the only one who thinks this is terrible design and terrible justification? You still end up with a fat phone just with an ugly looking case on it which will trap dust and cause worse scratches.
You'd be surprised how little scratches a case free phone has.
This is where my initial thought was going - obviously not so much an afterthought as bad design.
Surely they could have compromised with a 1mm thicker case for the rest of the phone, and made it all look flush.
"Thinness for the sake of dumbness" imo
You're only going to be 1 of 100000000 carrying the phone around so are you really concerned about how slim and sexy it is?
Unlike the Pro models, the iPhone 11 does not use OLED, but an IPS display and this is the same Liquid Retina HD matrix as last year's XR. The screen itself has a diagonal of 6.1 inches and a resolution of 1792 × 828 pixels, that is, it does not quite reach Full HD, but its pixel density reaches 326 per inch, as in the iPhone 4 with the first Retina display. Accordingly, individual pixels on the screen are not visible, the picture does not seem grainy and the text is read perfectly. Your applications will look very high quality. The drop in aesthetics can be seen every year. In the past, Apple focused on polished design, without compromises. Now, the most characteristic elements of the iPhone are the result of compromises.
To be clear enough, the level of aesthetics of many elements is still high. Unfortunately, at this tempo, iPhone 14 will be a strange creation. I hope not. I wish Apple would start aiming high again.
I'd love to listen in on a scope/tradeoff conversation between you and your PMs & engineers while you push the "polish without compromise!" line on them.
Not sure how they got away with calling the keynote "By Innovation Only" then shipping.......this
Probably because Apple has created the best mobile chip in history with the A13 Bionic. It's the fastest and least power hungry on CPU/GPU in the industry. They also have been making serious leaps in mobile photography with hardware and software.
When someones used to drawing rectangles in Sketch all day the things you mentioned can go unnoticed. Thanks for putting it into perspective. The amount of R&D and shear innovation that went into the new Pros should not be overlooked.
I do like the video they made. But way too expensive for a phone.
From a web design POV, am I the only one that sees no point in that initial container that the first block of animations and text is in?
The cam lenses are almost comedic. The 11 is a bit cleaner than the 11 Pro but it’s still a lot of things peering out at the back.
I’m glad I picked up my Xr last year. The battery and screen is really terrific. I’ll wait for next years overall (I’m not a great photographer). The colour options on the base 11s are all quite soft. The blue and coral from last years model were vibrant. But I kind of dig the switch in colour tones year to year.
