ASK: What's the size of design team in your company?

almost 4 years ago from , @AllPrototypes.com

Hi, I have a few questions for all designers working in companies building own products and services (not agencies):

1) How many people do you have on your design team/in your design department?

2) What are they roles / how's the team structured?

3) How do you work with other departments? Are you embedded/centralized?

4) How big is your company? What's developer:designer ratio?

All thoughts related to this are welcomed!

I'm in a small company (corporate lending software development), the design team is me. We've got a staff base that fluctuates between 10-20 people, but generally I'm the box of crayons that gets passed around between everyone.

    Everyone is a designer.

But no really it's just me. 30 or so people in the company.

Hmm, not sure it fits, but my company has services like: software development, team augmentation, and consultancy (here I'm involved). The team has 3 people, me and 2 other people. I'm the "Head of Design"[insert meme here]. We often work with the Marketing department, for social media campaigns and other marketing materials, but we also do clients work (UX/UI design). The company size: I think it just got to 200 people. Most of them are developers. We also have a 3D department (Unity, 3DSMax and ZBrush). So we can add here other 2-3 artists (people that are not developers).

    1) I was the only designer up until about ~20 people. Then we got an intern and mentored her to a full-time position. Eventually, we hired one more full-time designer by the time we were around 50 people in the company.

    2) We have two main product teams with their own PO, Engineering Leads, etc. that get one dedicated designer each. I'm leading the design team jumping in between helping where we need it the most.

    3) Hard to explain this one over my breakfast coffee, another day :D

    4) Right now about 60 people. Maybe about 6-7 ish engineers per designer. Though I expect the difference growing larger soon in favor of engineers.

    1) 3 people 2) It's a flat structure, no hierarchy 3) We are embedded in the Product Org 4) 400-500 people; ratio is 1 designer : 23 developers

I also recommend checking out this report if you haven't already, someone has already collected most of the information you're asking about and made a report out of it: http://uxtools.co/survey-2018

    1) 1-3. Started with 1 (me) built up to 3. Went to 1. Currently back at 2 and adding another here soon.

    2) I'm the lead UX, one is a generalist (soon to be added), the other is focused on video and motion work.

    3) We support the entire company and multiple departments and teams for their work. We are centralized in the tech department among the dev teams.

    4) 300-500 people. I think we are in the 400 range right now. We are hiring a lot of people and I think I heard they want to get into the 600 range. Not sure what the dev/des ratio is but it's fairly high. 2/3 designers support 5 teams.

4 designers with about 40 employees. Would say 4 developers per 1 designer for ratio. Generally we have around 4/5 projects going on at the same time which each have 1 dedicated designer. We pair together once a week and have some company-wide projects we tackle together tho.

    1. In our department 10. additional 8 spread across the company and a lot more with external agencies. If considering only digital (software and services).

    2. Design Leads, UX Designers, Visual Designer, User Researcher, UX Manager ... In our deparment, we have a flat hierarchy. All report to me legally, but mostly the Design Leads are coordinating work on projects. The other 8 are embedded in product/sales teams.

    3. With other departments, we either fully support (internal agency style), pair up with the embedded designers or sometimes even just support coordination of externals. Depends on project. We have different co-working models. . Overall semi-centralized setup.

    4. Company size as of last month: 29k globally. The exact dev:design ratio would be hard to know since a lot of the dev is done externally and I don't have the exact numbers there. But my best guess would be a 1:20 ration. Heavily working on improving that :)

Btw we are a hardware product company. Software and Services are new for us but envolving fast.
